I was privileged to be Prof. Hyman´s student in American constitutional history at the University of Illinois. When I was an undergrad doing an honor´s thesis (which he would correctly insist was only a research paper), he invited me to join his graduate seminar in constitutional history of the American Reconstruction.
The seminar met in his home, where we were privileged also to meet and enjoy the gracious (and delicious) hospitality of Ferne Hyman. The seminar introduced me to the work and responsibilities of academic research and writing.
They surely were the ideal honorary grandparents to Brookwood Community residents. That they devoted their later years to a community for people with disabilities is consistent with their earlier work and commitments.

Dear Lee and Gary,
I am so sad to learn of the loss of Lee's father. I only knew him slightly through Rice connenctions but I know he was a fabulous teacher. May your days ahead become easier. I send caring and friendship. Judy Allen

I am so sad to learn of Harold's death. Only in the (many) years since I finished my doctorate at Rice have I realized just how important both he and Ferne were to me, how generous each were -- and how patient with what Harold once termed that "skinny Catholic boy." He was tough, but never harsh, demanding but never unfair. To this day, one of my most cherished memories is the day I passed my dissertation defense. After the committee had deliberated, Harold came to find me in the offices of the Papers of Jefferson Davis, where I worked, and gave me the greatest bear hug I have ever had. Then and there he insisted, "Now, you must call me Harold." I did, but it was always somewhat difficult to be that familiar with someone who had done so much to help this naive Iowa farm boy. I miss them both. My deepest sympathy to his children and all of his family.

My condolences to the family. Dr. Hyman was truly a great person. He was also a wonderfully generous and supportive teacher to all students who asked for his help.

A great man, and a good friend. I wish the family comfort in knowing that he and Ferne are holding hands again.

A great man and a good friend. He attended all three of my commencements, and gave me my doctoral hood at the third. And attended my wedding. I miss both Harold and Ferne, and take some comfort that they are back together.

Dr. Hyman was one of a kind! I never saw him that he didn't have a smile on his face and a witty comment to cheer your heart. My love to all of his family.
He will be missed, greatly.
