I've been trying to take some time to find a way to meaningfully talk about the passing of Mr. Terry. But, I think in the end the problem is my words are inadequate. I guess I can say one thing with absolute certainty: He believed in me. And that means a great deal.
Mr. Terry was an amazing man who, by some radical blessing, decided I deserved his grace and enlightened philanthropy. My life was changed by his belief in my potential, my dreams, and my goals. His wisdom, foresight, and generosity leaves me forever in his debt, and aspiring to make him proud, too. He has transformed our lives. He has transformed my life. There will continue to be more to come. My success is his success, which is our success. That's what you call a community.
I believe it is rare in life to receive gifts, blessings, and support from someone who isn't family, and doesn't know you- but picks or chooses you. Sometimes, an act like that can change lives. Howard and Nancy Terry's vision and mission for the Terry Foundation did that for me.
His wide-ranging legacy will continue to live on. We will carry it within each of us. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and the Foundation staff, as well as my fellow Terry Scholars. May he rest in peace and eternal happiness, and may God bless his soul.

Howard's life is his legacy. He has touched the lives of thousands of people in Texas and throughout the U.S. He always said that the Foundation was the most important thing he ever did, and it has changed thousands of lives for the better. But even beyond the Foundation, those of us who knew him are better in countless ways for having received the benefit of his wit and wisdom. Our thoughts and prayers are with family and friends, all of whom will miss his smile, his earthy advice, and his constant support.

Mr. Howard Terry was a man to whom I will be eternally grateful. By funding my college education, he gave me the chance to be successful. However, his impact on my life extended far beyond that of financial support; Mr. Terry embodied unfailing character, dedication, generosity, humility, integrity, leadership and love, and he will forever be one of my most respected role models. He was truly devoted to the advancement of the Terry Foundation and the people whose lives it touched. I will always be proud to call myself a Terry Scholar. God Bless.

My family and I wish to express our sympathy and gratitude to the Terry family. In 2000 my daughter was interviewed by Mr.and Mrs. Terry and accepted as a "Terry Scholar". As the middle child of 5 and parents who were teachers, this was an incredible gift and opportunity. She went on to become an attorney and I believe learned much from this generosity.
