Howard Joseph
Yorston Loving husband, father and friend, Howard J. Yorston peacefully passed Sunday, August 18, 2013 with family by his side.
Born November 27, 1923 in New York City, New York, to William Yorston and Margaret Butler Yorston. He lived in New York City until enlisting in the Air Force with his brother, Bill in 1941. He served in World War II as a bombardier and in Korea as an engineer. He attended Rolla Missouri School of Mines earning his Bachelors and Masters Degree in Geology.
He married Wanda Stanley July 5, 1946 and raised two daughters in Houston. He began working at Carter Oil and then enjoyed a long, successful career as a Geologist/Geophysics with Exxon until his retirement in 1986. He co-wrote "The Pitfalls of Seismic Interpretation" in 1973 with Paul M. Tucker which became a staple textbook in Geology. Upon retirement he and Mr. Tucker embarked globally, teaching with SEG, classes to students and peers. His extensive travels took he and Wanda to most continents, and they lived in his beloved France for a year where he learned French. A lover of languages, he learned Spanish and, in later years, taught English as a Second Language at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church for several years, where he was fondly known as "Mr. Howard". An avid reader and intellect who loved science, astronomy, and mathematics; yet loved raising butterflies and feeding all the neighborhood cats. He was a long time member of St. Cecilia's Church.
Preceded in death by his father, William, mother, Margaret, brother, Bill, sister, Rita Grant, sister, Helen Conaway and nephew, Jeff Conaway. He is survived by his wife, Wanda, Daughters, Cathi (Steve) Schulze, Stacy (Ron) Stoker and step-daughter, Sherwyn Sherman, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church September 3, 2013 at 10:30. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to a charity of your choice.

My wife Christine and I will truly miss Howard. We got to know Howard from our many encounters while walking our dog Emma and from St. Cecilia. He was a very special human being and we were blessed to have known him.
