Hubert Odom Obituary
Hubert Turner Odom, Jr.
01/22/1941 - 04/13/2025
Hubert Turner Odom Jr. passed away peacefully on April 13, 2025, at the age of 84, after living for many years with dementia, which he met with quiet strength and grace.
Hubert was born in Kerrville, Texas, on January 22, 1941, to Hubert T. Odom Sr. and Mabel Odom, and raised in Lafayette, Louisiana. He graduated from Lafayette High School in 1959 and cherished the lifelong friendships he formed there. His talent on the football field earned him a scholarship to Tulane University, where he played halfback. When a career-ending knee injury altered his path, he transferred to the University of Texas, where he was a member of Sigma Chi and earned a degree in Economics. He went on to earn his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in 1966.
Hubert met the love of his life, Edith Ann Speed, when the two were set up on a blind date by a friend. They married on August 24, 1963, and built a life of love and partnership, raising their two sons in Sealy, Texas. Hubert shared his love for sports with his sons, coaching their little league baseball teams and announcing the Sealy Tiger football games on nights when his boys weren't playing. He made a point to call out as many players' names as he could over the loudspeaker-a small act that perfectly captured his thoughtfulness.
Hubert led a distinguished law career, practicing law in both Sealy and in Houston. He had the honor of being admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was among a rare group of Texas attorneys board-certified in three separate areas of law-Commercial, Real Estate, and Farm and Ranch-providing trusted counsel to generations of clients for more than 50 years. Known for his calm wisdom and thorough knowledge, he was a true counselor in every sense of the word.
In 1998, Hubert and Edith moved to Houston to be closer to their family. There, he continued his private practice and served as General Counsel to The Avera Companies, where he had the joy of working alongside both of his sons and helping to grow a successful family-led development company until his retirement.
Hubert was a lifelong learner, endlessly curious and always eager to explore new interests. He earned his pilot's license, raised registered Brangus cattle at The Little e Ranch, and devoured books on a wide range of subjects. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of Texas high school football and would recall decades of games, players, and statistics with striking clarity.
He found deep joy in playing golf, hunting and fishing-not just for the sport, but for the moments they allowed him to share with family and old friends. He lovingly encouraged and supported Edith's love of travel, joining her on many adventures, including unforgettable trips to Russia and Ireland.
Hubert was a proud Longhorn and an enthusiastic supporter of Texas Football, taking great pride in being able to share the full gameday experience and traditions with his family. Above all, Hubert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Edith Odom; sons Hubert Turner Odom III (Trey) and wife Stacey, and Lance Durbon Odom and wife Ruth; grandchildren Blake Odom and wife Ashland, Adair Brueggeman and husband Kevin, Henry, Charlotte, and Claire Odom; and great-grandchildren Turner Odom and Louisa Brueggeman.
Even as dementia gradually took his memories, his kindness and gentle spirit never waned. Hubert will be remembered for his integrity, his intelligence, the breadth and depth of his knowledge, his great laugh, and his deep love for his family.
Friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories of Hubert during a reception to be held at Houston Country Club from 5 o'clock until 7 o'clock on Tuesday, the 13th of May.
In lieu of customary remembrances, kindly consider a contribution in Hubert's name to Houston Junior Woman's Club.
