Hubert Ried Obituary

Dr. Hubert Leo Ried
1922-2016
On March 12, 2016, Hubert Leo Ried entered into the eternal home of the Lord. Hubert, a native of Olean, New York, was born on July 27, 1922 to Charles and Clara Ried. He was the youngest of five children, which included two sisters, Margaret and Carolyn, and two brothers, Wilbur and Charles. He attended St. Bonaventure University and the University of Buffalo. He then studied at Georgetown University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. graduating with a Doctorate of Medicine on March 17, 1946. During a general internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, New York, he met Jean Mary Hourigan, a young nursing student, on a Valentine's Day blind date. On September 27, 1947, they married and began their 68 year journey together.
This journey began as Hubert finished training at Cornell's New York Hospital under Dr. George Papanicolaou, who pioneered the Pap Smear for cervical cancer in women. From there, they traveled to Hot Springs, Arkansas, where Hubert participated in the screening of women for this disease to determine the validity of the Pap Smear. During this time, Jean and Hubert were blessed with Mary Virginia, the first of three children. In 1948, they moved to West Virginia where Hubert served several coal mining towns as a general practitioner of medicine.
In 1950, Hubert began his pediatric training at Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C. In 1952, while completing this phase of his medical career, Jean and Hubert became parents again, with the birth of their son, Mark. That same year, they moved to Houston where Hubert joined an established general pediatric practice. He began his own solo pediatric practice in 1954. During this time Jean and Hubert saw the birth of their last child, Celeste, in 1957. He also began serving in the Department of Pediatrics at the fledgling M.D. Anderson Institute, which was located in a converted residence on Bagby Street. Hubert served 42 years at M.D. Anderson until his retirement as a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in 1996. Hubert continued in private practice until he closed his office in 1998 after years of a very active medical practice. Even in retirement, he stayed active in medicine by doing well-baby checkups for the Harris County Hospital District for several years. He also attended Grand Rounds seminars at Texas Children's Hospital.
One most of his most enduring accomplishments was his involvement, along with other dedicated local Jesuit alumnae, in establishing a Jesuit high school in Houston. Their efforts paid dividends when, in 1960, Father Michael Kennelly, S.J. opened the doors to what would become Strake Jesuit College Preparatory.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Jean, daughter Mary Virginia Ried Simpson and her husband, Gayland, their children Christopher and Lindsey, son, Mark, and his wife, Stephanie, their children, Arthur, Margaret, and Angela, and daughter, Celeste Ried Reavis and her son, Ried.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 6 PM at the Bradshaw-Carter Home in Houston followed by a wake service and Rosary. Mass of the Resurrection will be Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at 10 AM at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 3617 Milam Street in Houston. Burial will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway in Houston.

Dr. Ried met me at M. D. Anderson in Houston. I was three years old when my parents were told I had a Wilms Tumor in my right kidney. I don't remember much about it, and my mother to this day doesn't talk much about it, but I've heard stories here and there from her close friends. As I got older, I continued to visit M. D. Anderson, every three months, then every six months, and then annually. I DO REMEMBER Dr. Ried when I was in grade school, high school, and how he would walk into the room and visit with my mother, and he would always make a point to turn to me and ask me questions about school, and my friends, and of course how I was feeling. He was personable, and he made me feel comfortable. As I grew, there were side effects, but Dr. Ried talked about these things with me, and how I was going to make it through just fine. I'm 64 years old now, and as I look and think back on those precious memories, Dr. Ried was an inspiration, he was a rock and he always gave me hope I would be okay....and I was. After being told I couldn't have children, I had a beautiful, unexpected boy in 1990, and another child (a red-headed daughter) in 1996. Both are healthy, hard-working, and lovable young adults. (I think God through the 'red-head' in the mix to keep us on our toes and feeling young!) Dr. Ried is often in my prayers and I thank God for giving us such a great man for all the children (and others) he has helped to heal.

I am a 70 year old RN (still working in pediatrics and Dr. Reid and Mrs. Reid took excellent care of both of my daughters from birth to adolescence. He was an exceptional, skilled, compassionate pediatrician. I have wonderful memories of Dr. and Mrs. Reid. May your happiest memories sustain you.

Dr. Ried took care of me as a child and then cared for both of our children. A loving and compassionate man who I was blessed to know. Sending love and prayers to Mrs. Ried, who was always by his side, Celeste, his Saturday nurse and the entire Ried family.

Dr. Ried took care of me at MD Anderson for what seemed like my whole life. He was always there whenever I needed him and through my concerns for my future. He was such a lovely and compassionate man. I always knew that I was in good hands. A great doctor. My father who would bring me to my exams, thought the world of him. My Dad is having a great time now visiting with him in heaven. My prayers are with the entire family. Thank you for allowing him to be a part of my life. I will always hold him in the highest regard. BTW..I am now 52.

Dr. Ried took care of both of my children from birth until they went away to school. He was always kind and patient with a young mother. I often saw him caring for children at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

May he rest in peace. I pray for God's comfort for his family.

When we moved to Houston, Dr. Reid was pediatrician to my 3 children. We first saw him on Dorrington and then out past Chimney Rock. He was a wonderful, competent, attentive, and skilled practitioner. Dr. Ried continued to see one of my children past his 18th birthday. When that son was in the office awaiting his appointment others looked at him askance because he was there solo and all others had children with them. I am very grateful for having had Dr. Reid in our lives, for the good care he provided, and I send condolences to the family.
