James Fuller Obituary

James Fuller, Sr.
11/30/1937 - 01/05/2024
James Micheal Fuller, Sr., 86,of Houston, Texas went gracefully & peacefully into the loving arms of his Savior, January 5, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren in his final hours.Mr. James Fuller was born in the year 1937 on the 29th day of November to Mr. Amos and Mrs. Climette Kendrick-Fuller in Randolf County, Cuthbert Georgia. James was the second born child and the first boy of twelve children. He was raised, armed, and nourished in the admonition of the Lord.James started school at the age of five with his sister Dora. He was an excellent student, graduating at the age of seventeen from Randolph County Training School.
James Sr. spent countless hours with his father, Amos Sr. and was groomed to be a responsible man. On July 5, 1953, his father passed away when he was only 15 years old. After completing school in 1955, James wanted to find employment in his hometown, but his mother insisted that he further his life goal, enlisting in the United States Armed Services at the age of 17. Due to his love for his mother and younger siblings, James sent more than three quarters of his pay home to his mother, to help care for his siblings. He served three years in the Armed Services where the "spindly legged center" described by the Army News outlet, received a basketball scholarship. He was honorably discharged and began his academic and college basketball career at Xavier University of New Orleans Louisiana, where he met his love and future wife, Mathilda Marie Olivier Fuller.
Upon receiving his degree in Pharmacy from Xavier University of New Orleans, James along with Mathilda moved to Chicago where he served as one of the first African-American managing pharmacist for Walgreens. After marrying his beloved wife in 1964, The couple moved to Houston, Texas and went on to have three children, Constance Renee, James Jr,. and Bridget Elizabeth. In 1977, James opened his own drugstore, Fuller's Drugs, where he served an entire community of people with love and kindness.
Our father had a special place in his heart for the people of Sunnyside. He would want us to thank all of his clients, especially the ones from Sunnyside. Our family would like to thank you for being his friend as well as his client. Your support and encouragement were invaluable to him, and he was grateful for the trust that you placed in him.
Sensing that the Sunnyside community needed access to an attorney in the neighborhood, He attended and received his legal training from Thurgood Marshall School of Law and graduated in 1974. Afterwards, he built a law office on Bellfort and Scott. He told us when he opened the doors, the people in the community did not hesitate in supporting him. He did not only represent his client in the community, but he represented many of his clients' children and their children. It was an honor for him to work with and alongside his clients in resolving their issues. Our family would like to thank you again for the privilege of letting him serve you.
Our father expresses to us that he was so passionate about Sunnyside until most of the people who leased office space from him or worked for him were from Sunnyside. His legal secretary of 31 years, Ms. Raymona Rundless, is from Sunnyside and a Evan E. Worthing graduate. Our father expressed that she was the most competent legal secretary he had ever encountered. He told us that she personally knew most of the clients that walked into the office and insisted that they be competently represented. He said that she consistently impressed him and never failed to surprise him with her creativity and out of the box thinking. He told us that whenever he presented documents in court, Judges would always compliment him on his paperwork and it was all due to Ms. Rundless.
Anthony Shorter and Anthony Shepherd were two attorneys that leased office space from our father's building. Attorney Shorter was with our father from 1989 to 1998 and Attorney Shepherd was with my father from 1998 to the present. Both grew up in Sunnyside and attended Worthing high school. Our father said that both men understood the people of Sunnyside and gave them outstanding legal representation. He also said that could not have ask for better qualified attorneys to represent the Sunnyside community than those two gentlemen. James was a man with a profound thirst for knowledge, not seeking to know, but to understand. His interests were sports, such as golf, football, and most obviously basketball. He thoroughly enjoyed history, geopolitics, and often spent many Sunday mornings watching numerous political commentaries and shows. He also enjoyed reading and could be found in his favorite chair engrossed in a novel for hours.
James lived a life that only people can dream of. He accomplished everything he set his sights on and went beyond in his goals. He desired to have a loving wife, exemplary children and grandchildren and work until he physically was unable to in October of 2023. He supported his children's collegiate careers, ambitions in life, and provided wisdom to his grandchildren who lingered on his every word of both instruction and support.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mathilda, with whom he share 55 years of marriage, his mother and Father Amos & Climette Fuller, and his brothers Amos Jr., and William. He is survived by his children, Constance, James and Bridget and his daughter-in-law Vanessa. He leaves behind six grandchildren, Dominique Narcisse (33), Jordan Narcisse (30), Sophia Narcisse (21), Edson Mumba (17), Jameson Fuller (15) & Vance Fuller (11), as well as 9 siblings, and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
