James Grubbs Obituary

James Bryan Grubbs Jr.
05/01/1937 - 09/12/2025
James Bryan Grubbs Jr, passed away peacefully at home on Sept 12, 2025. He was born in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Ellen Elizabeth Rollins Grubbs and James Bryan Grubbs, Sr.
He grew up in Columbia and attended Columbia High School. There, he was a key player on the football and basketball teams, and was even voted "Best Dancer." He then attended The Citadel and The University of North Carolina. His father was transferred to Houston with Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith in 1957, and Bryan later transferred to The University of Texas, where he met the love of his life, Neat Eddleman. At the time of his passing, they had been married almost 65 years.
At UT he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity where he developed many strong, lifelong friendships. He then began his career at Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor for over 50 years, which he truly loved.
He was an avid outdoorsman, and took great pleasure spending time with loved ones, fishing and hunting, as well as playing golf at Houston Country Club, where he spent so much time. He also loved spending time in Galveston, Texas and at the beaches of Pawley's Island and Litchfield Beach, South Carolina, and he passed that love onto his family.
He was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Houston where he and Neat were married. After a recent diagnosis, he succumbed to cancer and his deep and abiding faith in The Lord brought him great comfort, strength and peace. Bryan will be greatly missed by all who knew him and his unwavering love will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his wife Neat; children Nancy and husband Victor Pereda and Julie Stieneker; grandchildren Kristen and Nicholas Pereda, Bryan Stieneker, and Adelaide and husband Luke Thomas; siblings Betsy McCurry and Nancy Brennan, as well as numerous family members. He is preceded in death by his parents Ellen Elizabeth Rollins Grubbs and James Bryan Grubbs, Sr.
The family would like to give our love and heartfelt gratitude to his caregiver Alice Ragston for her invaluable help, care, guidance and love. Although his time with Houston Hospice was very brief, we truly appreciate their care in his final days. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service Tuesday, October 7th at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel and a reception to follow at First Presbyterian Church 5300 Main St. Houston, Texas 77004
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude contributions be made to The American Cancer Society, Houston Hospice, St. Judes or charity of your choice.

I have been a friend since college and since his marriage to my childhood friend, Neat. Bryan was always a fierce competitor and we had many duels to the death at handball, paddleball and squash at the downtown Y and later in tennis, golf and hunting. There are many stories and fond memories. Then we got old and that is the ways things go. Bryan will be missed. RIP.

Bryan and I were good friends in Columbia, sc back in the day. Grew up together, graduated from high school together and had many wonderful times. We went to college in different places and then his family moved to Houston. We saw each other a couple of times over the year in Columbia. My condolences to his sisters, Betsy and Nancy.

Bryan was a class act and true gentleman. A great mentor at work and on the golf course. We always bet $1 on the UT Aggie game to keep the friendly spirit alive. A godly man who will be missed by many. RIP "Grubbers"

George and I will miss seeing Brain's smiling face on Christmas Eve. Over the years we have shared many dinners
at his sister's home. He will be missed.
