James Larkin Obituary

James (Jim) Charles Larkin, Jr.
1934-2021
Born in Waco, TX on December 31, 1934, graduated from Valley Mills High School as a 4-sport letter-man and state debate champion. Entering the University of Texas and there he became a member of Oak Grove, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Delta Phi. He received his BBA from UT in 1962 and LLB from UT law school in 1964. From 1957 – 1960 he served in the US Army primarily stationed in Berlin. Jim passed away on August 25, 2021. Jim is survived by his loving wife, daughter, 2 sons, 2 grandchildren, sister, and many nieces and nephews. Jim served as Harris County DA for 28 years until his retirement in 1993. During his career, he performed Administrative duties and served as Chairman of the Hiring Committee for 19 years where he watched hundreds of young lawyers advance through the DA's office. After retiring as DA, Jim became a visiting judge for the Harris County for 17 years. During these 17 years, he and his wife enjoyed many trips abroad and throughout the US. Jim was a member of Tomball Country Club and enjoyed playing tennis, bridge and workouts at YMCA. He spent weekends with family….watching football, playing sports, bridge and was Golden Dad full of love and quick wit. A laid-back fisherman of any bed of water, serious and subtle and jokester at same time. Mr. Laid-Back…. Mr. Chill…..Grill Master of the Yards...Honest...Sincere...Full of Goodness. Jim was a lifelong Methodist and long-time member of Lakewood UMC. He served on the Board of Trustees and as a Trustee on the Permanent Endowment Fund. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to LUMC or Boys and Girls Country of Houston in Hockley, TX.

I'm really glad I came to Jim's memorial service. The talks by three of Jim's friends were interesting and humorous. The songs were beautiful. The reception was the best ever. It was good seeing "old" friends and chatting with them. I enjoyed sitting at the table with Shirley and their children. It was amazing seeing a granddaughter wearing Jim's army shirt that he wore when on duty in Berlin about 1954. I have fond memories of getting together with Jim, Shirley, and their friends. Have a good life and be safe.

Jim and I came to the district attorney´s office about the same time. Spent a lot of time fishing with Jim when he had a place on Lake Livingston and he and others from the DAs office would come to my place on Toledo Bend lake. He was a damn good administrator. Loved his dry sense of humor. Glad I got to visit with him when he sat as a visiting judge. RIP Jim.

Jim Larkin has been a good friend of ours for many years. He was one of the kindest, sweetest and funniest people you could ever know. God has truly received another angel. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Jim Larkin, quite the character. I LOVED chatting with him, hearing his stories and jokes. He sure knew how to get you going on any subject. I stopped every time he was in the yard working, listening to his views on politics, religion, travels, holidays, news. He was hilarious, witty, serious, kind hearted, humble, a fine gentleman. YOU will surely be missed. You're in a better place now, witnessing first hand, this twisted fallen world from above. No more Chronicle newspaper or FOX news...I am keeping my eye on Shirley. Praying for peace and comfort to the family.

Jim and Shirley were good friends of Melinda and myself before Melinda passed in 2007. I always enjoyed our group gatherings. I enjoyed talking to Jim about the law since he worked for the Harris County District Attorney's office. Jim was a good guy and he will be missed. We were in Dallas for their daughter's wedding on the same day that Princess Dianna was killed in an auto accident.
