James R Noland Jr
1924-2017
James Russell Noland, Jr., devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away on August 2, 2017, at age 93. James was a graduate of Emory University (A.B., 1945), Yale University (M.Div., 1948), and New York University (M.A., 1954). During World War II, he served his country as an officer in the United States Navy.
James moved to Houston in 1954 to become Executive Director of Protestant Charities, a United Fund Agency which coordinated between many of Houston's churches and community service organizations. He also taught at seven local universities in the fields of history, sociology, education, and organizational behavior.
In 1975, James created a personality assessment profile, Personalysis, to enable self-awareness, respect for diversity, and a greater ability for productive collaboration. Together with his wife, Mary, the Personalysis Corporation was established to market the assessment and provide consulting services to individuals, industry and communities world-wide. Through Personalysis, James leaves a legacy which continues to inspire and transform individuals and corporations. In his his retirement, James continued working on the science of personality as it relates to the laws of physics.
James is survived by his wife, Mary R Noland and two children, James Russell Noland III and Elise Noland Moore. He was predeceased by a daughter, Ellen Noland Skidmore. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Coleman Noland, a sister, Marianne Noland Batey, and grandchildren Westley James Skidmore and Elizabeth Delaney Moore.
A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at First Congregational Church of Houston on October 15, at 3:30 pm.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to The School of Divinity Unrestricted Scholarship Endowment at The Yale Divinity School in his honor.
