JoAnn Lowe
The world lost a beautiful soul with the sudden and unexpected passing of JoAnn Lowe on August 9th, 2025. JoAnn was born in Syracuse, New York on December 12th, 1936 to Angelo and Angela Gulutz.
JoAnn graduated from Latfayette Central High School and went on to Cortland State University (now SUNY Cortland) where she majored in Elementary Education, intending to teach young children. But first she wanted to explore more of the country and world, so she began her career as a Stewardess (before flight attendants) with United Airlines. In January 1959 she worked a flight to Denver where she met Robert Lowe, then a Cadet at the Air Force Academy. Bob and JoAnn fell in love and married in April, 1960. They remained happily married for 65 years until her passing.
Their son Thomas Lowe was born later that year, followed by their daughter Maureen Lowe in 1962. Bob was a new lieutenant in the Marine Corps and constantly deployed, without dependents, on various foreign operations. The task of raising the children fell largely to JoAnn. She was an amazing mom, loving, giving and compassionate while she balanced motherhood, the duties of a Marine Corps wife, and frequent moves around the country, all with utmost competence.
From an early age JoAnn had been a voracious reader, wearing out her library card as a young reader. As an adult, she was never without a book, her home had multiple bookshelves and there was always a book in her purse wherever she went. She adored reading to young children including her own, her grandchildren, her great-granddaughter, or any group of young children, who would be enraptured as she read to them.
JoAnn was a long time member of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church where she served on the Alter Guild, including a term as Director and as a Stephen Minister. She was much loved by not only her extended family but by all who came to know her. Her kindness, her concern for others and warmth were hallmarks of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Guy Galutz, and her sister Carole Harris. She is survived by her husband Bob, their son Thom, their daughter Maureen, grandsons Dustin Froberg and Nicholas Palmquist-Klee, granddaughter Francesca Lowe and great-granddaughter Cataleya Froberg, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on September 6th at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, 12535 Perthsire Dr., Houston, TX. In lieu of flowers you are invited to donate to the Holy Spirit Endowment Fund or any Public Broadcasting Station.
