Joe Sample , who became a jazz star in the 1960s as the pianist with the Jazz Crusaders and an even bigger star a decade later when he began playing electric keyboards and the group simplified its name to the Crusaders, died on Friday in Houston. He was 75.
The cause was mesothelioma.
The Jazz Crusaders, who played the muscular, bluesy variation on bebop known as hard bop, had their roots in Houston, where Mr. Sample, the tenor saxophonist Wilton Felder, trombonist Wayne Henderson, and the drummer Nesbert Hooper (better known by the self-explanatory first name Stix) began performing together as the Swingsters while in high school. While attending Texas Southern, they added bassist Henry Wilson and the flutist Hubert Laws - who would soon achieve considerable fame on his own - to the group, changing their name to the Modern Jazz Sextet.
The band worked in the Houston area for several years but did not have much success until Mr. Sample, Mr. Felder, Mr. Hooper and Mr. Henderson moved to Los Angeles and changed their name to the Jazz Crusaders, a reference to the drummer Art Blakey's seminal hard-bop ensemble, the Jazz Messengers. Their first album, Freedom Sound, released on the Pacific Jazz label in 1961, sold well, and they recorded prolifically for the rest of the decade, with all four members contributing compositions, while performing to enthusiastic audiences and critical praise.
In the early 1970s, as the audience for jazz declined, the band underwent yet another name change, this one signifying a change in musical direction. Augmenting their sound with electric guitar and electric bass, with Mr. Sample playing mostly electric keyboards, the Jazz Crusaders became the Crusaders. Their first album under that name, Crusaders 1, featuring four compositions by Mr. Sample, was released on the Blue Thumb label in 1972.
With a funkier sound, a new emphasis on danceable rhythms and the addition of pop songs by the Beatles and others to their repertoire, the Crusaders displeased many critics but greatly expanded their audience.
For Mr. Sample, plugging in was not a big step. He had been fascinated by the electric piano since he saw Ray Charles playing one on television in the mid-1950s, and he had owned one since 1963. Nor did he have any problem crossing musical boundaries: Growing up in Houston he had listened to and enjoyed all kinds of music, including blues and country.
"Unfortunately, in this country, there's a lot of prejudice against the various forms of music," Mr. Sample told the Los Angeles Times in 1985. "The jazz people hate the blues, the blues people hate rock, and the rock people hate jazz. But how can anyone hate music? We tend to not hate any form of music, so we blend it all together. And consequently, we're always finding ourselves in big trouble with everybody."
They didn't find themselves in much trouble with the record-buying public. The Crusaders had numerous hit albums and one Top 40 single, "Street Life," which reached No. 36 on the Billboard pop chart in 1979. Mr. Sample wrote the music and Will Jennings wrote the lyrics, which were sung by Ms.Randy Crawford.
By the time "Street Life" was recorded, Mr. Henderson had left the Crusaders to pursue a career as a producer. Mr. Hooper left in 1983. Mr. Sample and Mr. Felder continued to work together for a while, but by the late 1980s Mr. Sample was focusing on his solo career, which had begun with the 1969 trio album Fancy Dance. His first true solo album Rainbow Seeker was released in 1978.
His later albums included The Song Lives On, featuring Lalah Hathaway (1999), Pecan Tree (2002) a solo piano recording Soul Shadows (2004). In 2007 he recorded the first of 3 cds featuring his trio and vocalist Randy Crawford (Feeling Good - 2007, No Regrets - 2009, Live in Europe - 2012) His last recording, Children of the Sun, is to be released this fall.
He also maintained a busy career as a studio musician. Among the albums on which his keyboard work can be heard are Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Tina Turner's Private Dancer, Steely Dan's Aja and Gaucho, and several recordings by B. B. King.
His catalogue of song has been used in various Films, TV Shows, and advertisements, becoming one of the most "sampled" in the industry, including Tupac Shakur's "Dear Mama."
Joseph Leslie Sample was born on Feb. 1, 1939, in Houston, the fourth of five siblings, and began playing piano when he was 5. His survivors include his wife, Yolanda; son, Nicklas and wife Victoria; three stepsons, Jamerson III and wife Kimberly, Justin, and Jordan Berry; six grandchildren, Canon and Holiday Sample, Jamerson IV, Karissa, Jase, and Jaden Berry; and a sister, Julia Goolsby.
In recent years, Mr. Sample working with his bassist son Nicklas, had worked with a reunited version of the Crusaders, his own Joe Sample Trio, and led an ensemble called the CreoleJoe Band, whose music was steeped in the lively Louisiana style known as zydeco. At his death he had been collaborating on a musical, Quadroon, which had a reading in July at the Ensemble Theater in Houston. Quadroon is based on the life story of Henriette Delille, the founder of The Sisters of The Holy Family, the first Order of African American Catholic Nuns. Henriette is currently up for Canonization as the first U.S., native born, African American Saint.
Yolanda would like to thank the doctors, nurses, chaplin, and staff at the MD Anderson Cancer Center for their professional yet loving care of Joe. And for the spiritual support they gave him and Yolanda during his extended hospitalization.
There will be a viewing open to the public Friday, Sept 19th, from 6-9pm., at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church. 4000 Sumpter Street, Houston Tx 77020.
In lieu of flowers etc., the family asks that donations be made to the Joe Sample Youth Organization, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit. Contributions can be made via pay-pal or credit card using the folioing link:

My first encounter with the Music produce by this wonderful musician was in the mid 80s. The many classics that were created by the man over the years of his life will forever live on in our hearts and mind.

God Bless you Mr. Sample your music helped me through some very trying times in my life, as it did countless others.

May your soul rest in peace and your spirit live on in the melodic creations that you created during your life time.

My sympathy to your family and friends.

As a musician, I have to say that Joe composed music the way I've always responded to in a pensive way. His "Rainbow Seeker" was the first and only recording - to this date - that I was immersed in every tune. If anyone's music could make God's voice be heard around the world, I always believed that it was Joe's.

I did not know Joe had died until the recent Grammy broadcast and I was in shock. I have loved Joe's music my whole adult life and I am now 63. His sound was so unique I could hear a piece on the radio and know it was him.My greatest memories are of seeing him live in Philadelphia at the Academy of Music and at the Keswick. His music as a solo artist and with the Crusaders will be a part of my life always.I am heartbroken he is no longer with us and my prayers go out to his family.

be it with the Crusaders or as a solo-artist, be it with others such as Randy Crawford, Al Jarreau, Joe Cocker, Steely Dan... Joe was, in every way, exceptional,
and he'll continue to enrichen our lives with his wonderful music.
The (one) day he flew away... it has come, as it will for all of us, but he's left his trace in our hearts and that's where he'll always stay. Thank you, Joe, you've made this cold world a better place !

I was saddened to learn of Mr Sample's passing. Unbeknown to me, I was searching the internet to find out if there was any latest release from him - but was met instead with the shocking and sad news. It was hard to believe. Because of Mr Sample's artistry, the good and timeless music he made - one never imagined that he would never be around - because we always expected and always received nothing but the best from Joe Sample. Mr Sample was a great musician and great pianist. I have followed his career and music since his Crusaders days. Mr Sample was a regular visitor to our shores, in Johannesburg and other places - participating in numerous jazz concerts and events. He never missed the opportunity to come over, when he asked to. The last time I saw him - it must have been couple of years back with his trio - and he sounded amazing as ever. One of my favourite albums (of his) is his collaboration with Lalah Hathaway - and my favourite track on that album is "The song lives on". How can I forget: "When the world turns blue". I listen to that album each time I want to hear good music and excellent piano playing. The album is full of amazing songs, and again, his playing of the piano is excellent. Joe Sample will be sorely missed - he is a true legend and his music will forever live on. Heartfelt condolences to his family. He was loved by all - from all corners of the world. We will certainly miss him. Rest in peace Mr Sample - you will always be remembered for the great songs you gave to the world.

Joe, thanks for sharing ur musical gifts w/the world. You never knew me, but we crossed paths a number of times when I lived in LA(1964-1971). U were 1 of my 2 favorite pianists living in LA. My most favorite solo u've recorded is on "Spain" u played on an Al Jarreau video...WOW!! I frequently replay that video just to listen to your solo. In the late 70s, I had a "flashback". It occurred to me you were the teen pianist w/the teen band that played for a dance for Jack & Jill, Inc. teens that was held on the TSU campus around '56 or '57. I planned to tell you that the next time we crossed paths. My condolences to the family of Joe Sample. I know your loss is great. I pray that the pain of your loss will diminish as the years pass. Rest in peace, Joe....and tell Teddy Edwards "hello" for me.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Sample, but through his music I was exposed to part of the best of what he was. I grew up in homogeneously caucasian Iowa and somewhat miraculously I was exposed to Mr. Sample and his Jazz Crusaders. Together they introduced me to inspired jazz music and racial diversity, and through this introduction it changed me for the better. What a talent, what a person as evidenced by the posts to this guest book, I think of him as a gift from God. So while I grieve along with his family and friends for the loss of this great talent, I celebrate that he is with God in heaven and look forward to joining him there someday.

Her was a gift to the world of jazz. His harmonic and rhythmic ideas, since he went solo, were highly unique and very palatable. He was a true artist in every since of the word. I bought every album of the Jazz Crusaders, The Crusaders and Joe Sample. I became a fan in 1963 while in my junior year of high school and rate his music as my all time favorite. I am a professional keyboard player and I am putting together a book of his music to celebrate his artistry.

Please don't sing sad songs for him, forget your grief and fears, For he is in a better place away from pain and tears... He's far away from hunger, and hurt and want and pride, He have a place in heaven, with the Master at his side. His life on earth was very good, as earthly lives can go, but Paradise is so much more than anyone can know... His heart is filled with happiness, and sweet rejoicing too, And now for him to walk with God is perfect peace, a joy forever new.

Mr.Sample and I got to know each other when he would bring his talents to the NY metro area(the Blue Note). I would always sit up front just to watch him play. Like a "deer in headlights" with such delight! At the end of each show I would bring my Sample collection of cds. He would sign everyone I would bring him. The great stories he would tell me about his past, & the up and coming projects would just thrill me!
His last trips to New York was really special because I got to meet his son Nick, as well as Wilton Felder, and the late Wayne Henderson as the "New Crusaders".
Nick, and I bonded like brothers, and Joe treated me like I was his son!
Mr.Sample was a great man, and a kind human being. Great stars like him never connect with their fan base. Joe treated me like family!

I met Joe Sample in 1995 at the Virgin Mega Store on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. He was doing a perfomance there and I got to take a photo with him. He is a major musical influence on my life. Our prayers are with his family and friends. Rest in peace Joe. We love you!! With love, Christine G. Padua and Juan D. Lopez.
