John Scott Obituary

Rev. John G. Scott Sr., 79, of Winchester, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 6, 2009.

The youngest of 11 children, to the late Preston and Fleeta Scott, he was born in 1930 in Woodstock, Virginia. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1950 and completed a tour in Western Germany. Upon his return, he began his theological studies and was later licensed and ordained as a Baptist preacher in 1961.

While completing his studies, he worked for the federal government, GSA, for 21 years. In 1975, he began working at the Winchester Medical Center as Supervisor of Environmental Services; where he retired after 20 years of service.

During all of this time, Rev. Scott served as pastor of St. John Baptist Church, Salem Luray, VA, Cochran Chapel Church, Mint Springs, VA, and Central Union Baptist Church, Craigsville, VA, concurrently for 14 years. During that time he would pastor at any one of these three churches each Sunday.

In 1978, he accepted the position of Senior Pastor of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, in Winchester, VA. While there he served as president of the Brackett Morrell Baptist Association of the ABCOTS and he also served as Past Master of King Hiram Masonic Lodge no. 53. He retired from Mt Carmel in 1996 and later served as Spiritual Director/Associate Minister at St. Luke Baptist Church, Berryville, VA; under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Charles Dekle.

Throughout the years, Rev. Scott continued to provide leadership, guidance and support throughout the community and local churches through his preaching, teaching, singing, stewardship, pastoral counseling and consultation-all through the word of God.

Although dedicated to his spiritual work, he was also an extremely devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and Uncle "Johnnie" to his entire family with whom he loved.

He is survived by his lovely wife of 57 years, Lucille E. Scott; three children, Carolyn Smith, of Reston, VA, John G. Scott Jr., of Winchester, VA, and Joyce S. Price, of Upper Marlboro, MD, and his sister, Fleeta Ruffin, Capital Heights, MD; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and four brothers.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with Reverend Gilbert Mack officiating. Interment will be in Orrick Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia. Friends may call prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 AM.

His family will receive loved ones, family and friends, Friday evening from 6:00-9:00 PM at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Winchester.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2654 Valley Avenue Suite B, Winchester, Virginia, 22601.

As I remember Rev. John Scott, I will think of the many years we were next door neighbors in Woodstock and the many joyous memories he and my brothers and sisters shared together. We call him "Johnny Scott" then. As a very young age he was preaching to us all. He and my brother Henry joined the Army at the same time.

All the memories of him will forever remain in my heart especially his deliverance of God's messages and his singing. Of all the many, many songs that he sang, there are two songs that will always remind me of him and they are: "If I can be of some help to somebody as I pass along the way, than my living will not be in vain" and my favorite is "My Desire". The words in that song gives a perfect description of him and how he lived his life.

Rev. John Scott lived up to and completed all his desires and God saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard for him to climb. He knew he was suffering and was in pain and would not get well on earth again. So God closed his weary eyelids and whispered "my child well done, come home.

It has saddened us all for Rev. Scott to leave us but his spirit will always watch over us and when we make the journey, I know Rev. Scott will be there with God smiling with open arms welcoming us.

With love and sympathy to his wife, Lucille; his children and his sister Rebecca (Fleeta) Ruffin.
