Judy Anne Kemp Amonett
07/28/1947 - 11/04/2025
Judy Anne Kemp Amonett passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on November 4, 2025. Born in Dallas on July 28, 1947 to Mr. James E. Kemp and Mrs. Virginia Butler Kemp, Judy attended The Hockaday School and Fairfax Hall Preparatory School before attending Vanderbilt University. At Vanderbilt, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and also met her future husband, Thomas Amonett.
The couple married in 1967 and moved to Houston in 1969 following Judy's graduation from Vanderbilt with a B.A. in English. It was there that they raised their two children, John and Robert. Judy was active in the Junior League of Houston, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, American Cancer Society, Vanderbilt University Alumni Association and numerous other charities around Houston. She loved entertaining and had a memorable catering partnership with her friend, Jeannette Armstrong.
Judy valued education and pursued post-graduate work in both business and law at the University of Houston after her children were grown. She earned a J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center in 2003 and was admitted to the Texas bar that same year.
A lifelong lover of needlework, Judy opened Knitting in the Loop in 2009, which became a gathering place for many in Houston's knitting community. She truly enjoyed the labor of love that was opening and managing the store.
One of Judy's other loves was travel. She visited six continents in her lifetime and had memorable visits to Australia, New Zealand, China, Africa, Italy and several other European countries. Her favorite place to be, however, was wherever her grandchildren were. She made frequent visits to Ohio, where John and his family lived for many years, and delighted when they would come to visit her in Houston.
She is survived by her sons John (Suzann Trevisan) and Robert Amonett, brothers Jimmy (Terrye) and John (Louise) Kemp, sister Carolyn Wittenbraker (Tom), former husband Thomas Amonett (Clair) and four beloved grandchildren: Morgan, Abigail, Zach and Lucie Amonett. Her memorial service will be in the chapel at St. John the Divine Church in Houston on Friday, November 21 at 3:00 PM with a reception to follow at River Oaks Country Club. In lieu of flowers, Judy has asked for contributions to St. John the Divine Church be made in her memory.
