Kate McNamara Obituary

KATE SCHWEPPE MCNAMARA died at home on June 3, 2007. She was born April 4, 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. McNamara was the daughter of Henry Irving Schweppe, Sr. and Kate Thompson Schweppe, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Dan Goodrich McNamara; her brother, Palmer Thompson Schweppe, her niece, Katherine Randall Schweppe; and her sister-in-law, Laura Randall Schweppe. A resident of Houston for over 50 years, Kate McNamara was educated at the Oxford School for Girls, Bradford College and the University of Texas in Austin. She was a member of the Junior League of Houston, River Oaks Garden Club, Houston Country Club, Galveston Country Club and The Key West Yacht Club. She was past board member of Tennessee Williams Fine Arts Center and Museum of East Martello, both of Key West, Florida, the Junior League, The United Fund, Planned Parenthood and past president of the Visiting Nurses Association. She was also owner of Sandford Hall Antiques. Besides her love of family, she loved the sea and everything pertaining to it; she loved fishing, snorkling and bird watching. She said "the sea restores my soul." Kate Schweppe McNamara is survived by three children, Kate Sharp Farris and her husband, Glen Woody Farris, DDS, Dudley Crawford Sharp, III and his wife, Jane Tenison Sharp and M. H. Palmer Moldawer and his wife, Susanna Showers Moldawer; her brother, Henry Irving Schweppe, Jr., M.D. and his wife, Pauline Arnold Schweppe; six grandchildren, Helen Tenison Sharp, Katherine Sandford Sharp, Anna Palmer Sharp, Matthew Schweppe Moldawer, Benjamin Nellins Moldawer, Eliza Showers Moldawer; her nieces, Anne Schweppe Ashmun and her husband, Stuart Whitaker Ashmun, Jane Schweppe Scott and her husband, Michael Stephen Scott. The family wishes to thank Mary Reque, Margarita Salguero and Ana Maria Arduz, as well as the staff at Inwood Manor for their devoted care of Kate. A memorial service will be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 8th of June at Christ Church Cathedral. The family suggests remembrances be made to the Music Fund at Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas Avenue, Houston, Texas 77002 or to a charity of your choice.

I knew "Texas Kate" only briefly, but am always inspired when I recall her grand livingness. I well remember how Kate always lifted the spirits of her friend and my then employer, Tennessee Williams.
