Kathryn Estes Obituary

KATHRYN C. (Katie) ESTES passed away peacefully at her home June 18, 2009. Born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma November 11, 1921. She was preceded in death by her parents Herbert L. and Kate Lash Cochran, her sister Helene C. Shreve and her loving husband of 58 years, Ernest L. (Don) Estes. Katie worked in newspaper and radio at a very early age, where she polished her great sense of humor and writing talents. She wrote lyrics with Anita Kerr for the Anita Kerr Singers, for Dean Martin, and for her husband Don Estes. She also was a gifted joke teller and an aficionado of limericks. Katie had a long and successful career in advertising sales with KPRC-TV, having retired after 40 years of what she claimed was the highlight of her life. Her favorite mission at KPRC had to be her role as the "friendly bookie" running the football pot (never on credit!) for many years. Katie was very involved in athletics: playing professional golf in her earlier years, taking up tennis at the age of 50 and continued to enjoy both until late in her life. She was an avid animal lover having cared for many rescue dogs, cats and even a house squirrel over the years. Her rescue Scottish Terriers Scotch, Duffy and Radar will miss her greatly. Katie is survived by her sons, Craig Estes and Gary Hawthorne and special family friend, Mable Peterson. Other family includes her nieces Brenda Benson and Carol Eldridge, her nephew Gary Cooper, cousins Margaret Ferguson, Gene Ruby and their families. She was also blessed with a multitude of great friends. Private services. The family requests that memorials, if desired, be directed to The Texas Scottie Rescue Fund 501©3, 5810 Windvale Drive, San Antonio, TX 78239, a favorite pet related charity, or to your charity of choice. As Katie loved nothing better than a great party, friends are invited to her home for a reception Sunday June 28th from 3 to 7 PM. There's a place in our hearts that shall never be without you.

Katie hired me at KPRC-TV in March of 1963 and I was the luckiest person in the world to work beside her for many years. Her work ethic was honorable and her sense of humor unbeatable. We worked hard and played hard. She not only taught me the TV business but also a lot about having fun along the way. Craig was just a little tyke when I met him and Katie was a loving, hovering "Mother Hen", trusting his care while she worked only to Mable, a much loved friend. Kate was always terribly proud of Craig....and when Gary came along she couldn't have been happier....she now had two to be proud of. We all watched Craig and Gary take care of Katie lovingly the last few years.....especially after Don passed away and she becae more dependent on a daily basis. I loved Katie and feel blessed to have been a part of her life. Craig and Gary, I know you'll miss her.......I'll miss her too.

Much love,
Ginnie

Craig & Gary, even though I only had the opportunity to meet Miss Katie one time, I will remember her always. What a personality and what a classy lady. You two are to be commended for the excellent care & companionship you gave her.

We will always remember Katie's zest for life- and her favorite limerick about Dave the hermit.
May your memories comfort you in the days to come- and know your friends send much love your way.
