Kirby Fortenberry Obituary

Kirby C. Fortenberry, Jr., 75, a loving husband, father and friend passed away Sunday, September 22, 2013. Kirby was a native Houstonian. He was preceded in death by his parents Lillian and Kirby Carl Fortenberry, his brother Clyde Fortenberry and step brother Worth Hillebrandt. His is survived by his wife Shirley Fortenberry, his son Kirby Fortenberry III, daughter Amanda Dawson and husband Mike, stepsons Taylor Cutshall and wife Yoya and Chris Cutshall, his sister Anna Wingfield and grandchildren Michael and Eric Dawson, his niece Lynda Conley and husband Mike and children.
Kirby graduated from San Jacinto High School and was All-City Center in '55 on the football team. He attended University of Houston and graduated from University of Texas with a BBA with Honors. He was a CPA and worked with Arthur Young Co. With a partner, he started Sunny's Convenience Stores and was VP/Treasurer. He then became President and owner of Flexmaster USA. In 1999 he retired, moved to Chappell Hill, TX where he pursued his lifetime hobby of building and flying remote control airplanes. He was a member of HARKS, Bomber Field and Brenham P-C Flying Clubs.
A memorial service to celebrate Kirby's life will be held on Thursday, September 26 at 2:00 in the afternoon at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Drive. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center or charity of choice.

Eddie and I will always fondly remember days on our porches at Galveston with Kirby and Shirley. We miss him terribly. Our prayers for all the family.

Kirby was a wonderful, lifetime friend of my brother, Leroy Towles. Kirby and my husband Jim flew remote controlled airplanes together many years ago. So sorry for your loss.
