Larry Check Wing Chu

Larry Chu Obituary

LARRY CHECK WING CHU, 86, peacefully crossed into the kingdom of Heaven on February 26, 2006 surrounded by his loving family and friends. "Uncle" Larry, as he was so fondly called by many, is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lily Eng Chu; his children, King Wei and wife Nancy Chu, Edward and wife Ashley Chu, Doris and husband Alan Dao, Lilly and husband David Cuff, Chuy Guen and husband Ling Chuen; grandchildren, Henry and wife Shari Chu, Alice Chu, Jon Lau, Alana Dao, Elizabeth Chu, Sing Yun, and Mai Yun; great-grandchildren Sarah and Lauren Chu. Uncle Larry was also known for over 30 years as" Timmy Chan". He opened his first restaurant in midtown Houston in 1950 and, for the next three decades, served some of the city's finest Chinese food and rib-eye steaks to people from all walks of life. He always had a smile to share as he circled the dining room, stopping at each table to ensure his customers were enjoying their meals. Over the course of the years, he opened another full-service restaurant in Greenway Plaza and pioneered the Chinese fast food industry with Timmy Chan's Chicken and Fried Rice. Always dedicated to helping others, Uncle Larry paved the way for the success of many young people by giving them jobs at the restaurant, assisting them in receiving higher education, and even hosting their weddings at no charge. In 1982, he and Lily retired from the restaurant business and the public eye but they remained committed to serving fine food, this time from the kitchens of Southwest Chinese Baptist Church. As active church members, they dished up culinary delights on a regular basis to their family of faith. Uncle Larry's love and generous contributions to others are shining examples to all who knew him and will remain as a lasting legacy to a man whom we shall all dearly miss. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Huey Ho., Mindy Pan, Al and Susie Yung, Pastor Peter Leong, their church family, the doctors and staff of St. Luke's Hospital for their loving care during this difficult time. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1st at Winford Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 2nd at Southwest Chinese Baptist Church, 12525 Sugar Ridge Blvd., Stafford (77477). A graveside service and committal will follow in Forest Park East Cemetery, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster (77598). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Uncle Larry's honor to Southwest Chinese Baptist Church, 281.495.1511. I met Mr.& Mrs. Chu, thru their daughter, my friends & extended family, Lilly & David;from the first time I met Mr. Chu,thru the few yrs,I always wanted to bow, in respect & reverence of his culture...I felt humbled in he & his wife's presence & Mr.Chu was always so kind to me,quiet, but kind & when you'd least expect it,in a serious look, he would crack a joke on what someone had said!(family functions) I remember that about Mr.Chu, even though I hardly knew him, I had a respect for him as I do his wife. My Heart goes out to Lilly, & David for him not being able to be with her at this time of her loss.My Heart aches , because of my love for both of them.My sincere condolences to you, your mother & family, my friend. Love & Blessing's, Kandi

In difficult times comfort may be found in many ways… through in a favorite photograph, song, or prayer, with a fond memory of a special time the two of you shared or through a hug from a heartfelt friend. Where ever you find comfort I pray for an abundance of it in your life. Remember that in faith your gift from God now is a very special guardian angel to watch over each of you. I am honored to have known “Uncle Larry” and the Chu family. Many blessing. With Love, Robbin
