Leroy Moore Obituary

Dr. Leroy G. Moore, Jr. of Prairie View, Tx, passed away on January 15, 2012, He was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on October 4, 1923 to Leroy G. Moore, Sr. and Theresia Bolden Moore. Also to this union was born his sister, Frances Moore Shropshire who preceded him in death. His secondary school education occurred at Douglas High School where he was an outstanding football and basketball player. He carried these skills with him to Langston University where he also lettered in these sports, and joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. In 1943, Leroy postponed his college studies to join the United States Air Force where he remained for three years and received the American Theater Campaign, Good Conduct, and World War II Victory Medals. He returned to Langston and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
In 1947, Leroy married the love of his life, Theodra Crowell Moore with whom he celebrated 44 wonderful years of marriage prior to her passing. To this union was born Dr. Sandra Moore and Dr. David Leroy Moore.
Dr. Leroy G. Moore, Jr. continued his academic pursuits at the University of Northern Colorado where he earned Masters and Doctorate degrees in Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He then began his academic and collegiate coaching careers, which took him to Arkansas A & M University and then to Prairie View A. & M. University. During his coaching career, he led his teams to two SWAC championships, four consecutive Georgia Invitational Tournament titles and the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association Championship. In 2008 Prairie View A. & M. University honored him by naming their intramural gymnasium the Leroy G. Moore, Jr. Intramural Gymnasium.
Services are as follows : Visitation: 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Friday, January 20, 2012 at Johnson-Phillip All Faiths Chapel, Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas. Funeral services: 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Johnson-Phillip All Faiths Chapel. Arranged and directed by Gerard Singleton
In lieu of flowers, to honor his memory, donations may be made to the Dr. Leroy G. Moore, Jr. Scholarship Fund at Prairie View A&M University

Dr. Moore was a blessing to me. He guided me toward obtaining my Masters Degree at PV. He was also responsible for me being hired as a coach and Director of Intramural Sports, for that I will be forever grateful and thankful to him. Rest In Peace
