I don't know why but felt led to contact Pastor Keys and the family as I'm an old family friend. Unfortunately just learned of him going to be with the Lord. My family and I want to send our thoughts and prayers to the Keys. Thank you for your husband/father helping and guiding me with my walk with the Lord during my short tenure at the church; I am a better man for it! God Bless, Patrick Haley

My condolence goes out to Betty and the family. Lionel and I were neighbors when we lived in the projects in Opelousas. Our homes backed up to each other. Betty, I remember when you started dating Lionel, you all was such a lovely couple. The last time I saw you both was at one of our class reunions, at Debra Chacherys house. I know this is a difficult time right now; but know the God have you and the family wraper in his arms. Continue to keep God first in your lives, and each day will become less painful. Love you, a friend always; Brenda Richard Covington.

My Friend and Cadet Classmate Reverend Lionel Keys,
Lionel and I entered the Houston Police Academy as cadets in Class #88 in 1979. After graduating the Academy, we were assigned to the Beechnut Substation. We shared many days and various activities together. I am saddened that he is no longer here with us, but I know that he has traveled a path that all of us must go. Right from the time we got to know each other, it was quite clear that he was a family man and a man of Faith. Also, we had common stories about Louisiana and life back home. And I won't even mention the wonderful days Lionel, Kelley, Valenta, Davis, Lee, Hromadka, McClelland, Forte, Stewart, Jenkins, I and others had working evening shift at 4503 Beechnut. I shall miss him. To me, his death blows out a candle that shed light on a long dark road.
To Betty and the rest of the family, stay strong and keep your faith. It is my wish that the Grace of God, Love of Jesus Christ and Communion of the Holy Spirit continue to Guide, Bless and Keep You!

Lionel and I were coworkers at HPD and neighbors in Vicksburg. Word of his passing was a sock, because we ran into each other in Walmart about two months ago and talked about old times on the job and going fishing in October, when it cools off. I'm really going to miss chatting with my friend, neighbor and coworker. I know that the power of prayer will help me get through this loss. I hope that prayer and time, will do the same for his family.

Lionel was a fellow officer and a good friend. His infectious smile and easy going demeanor made it easy for him to approach others to share the Gospel, which he did whenever the opportunity availed itself. I pray that the Holy Spirit will comfort his family during this difficult time.
