Marc Fite Obituary

MARC FITE, 77, native Houstonian, retired oil company credit manager and longtime musical-theater performer, died July 4 in the shock trauma ICU of Memorial Hermann Hospital 12 days after being critically injured when a car crashed through the front of a Shipley's Donut Shop where he was having coffee. Marc was born January 7, 1931, to Esther E. and Edgar T. Fite at his paternal grandfather's truck farm, now the site of DePelchin Children's Center on the banks of Buffalo Bayou at Shepherd. Predeceased by his parents and brother Tom Fite, Marc leaves to mourn his cousins Sue and Skipper Armstrong of Friendswood, Sharon and Jack Williams of Houston and extended family; also his longtime close friends C. Dale Olson and Gene Harbin of Los Angeles; P.J. Headley of Port Arthur; Susie Works, Margaret Hahn, Rene' Guiberteau, Margaret and Harvey Bott, Bill Bartlett, John Holt and Javier Ontiveros, all of Houston; his adored puppy, Charlie II; and countless other friends in the credit, arts and cultural communities. A 1949 graduate of San Jacinto High School, Marc earned a BA degree from the University of Texas at Austin in cultural anthropology and fine arts. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Japan before embarking on a long career in credit management, serving three terms as President of the Houston Association of Credit Managers before retiring from Eastman Christiansen. A lifelong music-theater aficionado who made his first stage appearances as a teenager in Houston's Summertime Light Opera and the nightclub revue The Kids Next Door, Marc also performed with the Avalon Theatre; The Ernie Pyle Players in Tokyo; Theatre, Inc.; and, most recently, Bayou City Concert Musicals. He was currently serving as treasurer of BCCM and served as a judge for the Tommy Tune Awards, the annual musical-theater awards for Houston area high school students. His retirement years were filled with travel, art collecting, tending his prize-winning orchids and bromeliads, volunteering at Young Audiences of Houston, Theatre Under The Stars, Chinese Community Center and Asia Society, recording children's books, performing in industrial films and being a tireless caregiver and chauffer for the family and friends he cherished. Marc's friends and family thank the superb and dedicated trauma doctors and nurses at Memorial Hermann who worked so hard to save him. At Marc's instruction, a graveside Catholic interment service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, at Hollywood Cemetery, 3605 North Main, followed by a poolside reception at Parc IV, 3614 Montrose Blvd. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible contributions made be made to Bayou City Concert Musicals, P.O. Box 542795, Houston, TX 77254 (www.bayoucityconcertmusicals.org) or Poodle Rescue of Houston, 13302 Schroeder Rd, Houston, TX 77070 (www.poodlerescueofhouston.com).

We have known Marc for 30 years.
He was a member of the Houston Bromeliad Society at the time. Marc always sent cards to all of his ladies.
We will miss him!

Marc hired me at Eastman Whipstock as a Credit Assistant. Then he molded, coached and pushed me to grow and helped promote me to Credit Manager and even helped get me elected to the Board of Houston Association of Credit Managers. I could not have done any of that without Marc.

I love him dearly and miss him very much until I see him again.

Marc was one of the early morning regulars at the YMCA on Stella Link. He always had a friendly smile and a kind word. I considered him a friend and I will miss him.

It is hard to put in words how much I will miss Marc Fite. He had such a zest for life that he made you feel better just being around him. He loved the theatre, his art, his orchids, his friends (especially Susie), and of course Charlie, the most charming poodle ever. He will be truly missed, but his spirit will live on in every Bayou City Concert Musical production as we work to continue to live up to Marc's high standards.

Marc Fite was a unique man and contributor to Bayou City Concert Musicals [BCCM], at which we met as fellow Board Members. Our Board meetings were mostly at his delightful home. He will be in my thoughts as BCCM continues the progress that Marc would have wanted.

I knew Marc through Ms. Rene Guiberteau and I can only say that he was a joy to be around. He was truly a gentleman in a time when those are hard to find. His giving spirit brought joy to all who knew him. I count it a privelege to have known him for as long as I did. I will miss seeing his smiling face, his beautiful orchids and his latest set of boots. He was truly, one of a kind.

I am a new neighbor and was just getting to know Marc. Although I only knew him for a short time, he was a dear and wonderful friend and neighbor. He brought such joy to everyone who knew him.

I can never thank Marc enough for all his hard work and generosity toward Bayou City Concert Musicals, both as performer and as board member. He was a great host and was always forthcoming with suggestions on how we could be better. He was always right. A real gentleman and a bright light in Houston's theatrical history will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Marc Fite was my mentor at Eastman Oil Well Survey Corp. He looked right past the 22 year old girl and created a business professional, teaching me skills in credit and purchasing, all the while making it the most fun job I ever had!

Marc with all his polish and propriety was just as comfortable talking to drilling engineers on site in Billings Montana as he was with bank executives. In recent years we connected for lunches and occasionally for live theatre events.

He was amazing and I will miss him dearly.

Knowing Marc has been a true treasure and joy! He stops by my orchid shop everytime he drives down Heights Blvd.
Marc brightens up a room everywhere he goes! I have also wondered just how many pairs of cowboy boots Marc has. He will be missed greatly. Marc has always gotten his orchids from me, other than this year, for his famous valentines parties.

I am so saddened by the news of Marc's death. I knew him briefly, through work while he was handling the estate of another friend. Now, it is clear that his friends are taking care of him the same way, which he certainly deserves. Marc truly touched my life in a rare way, welcoming me to his home to see his lovely orchids, mementoes and, of course, Charlie, the dog. He even took the time to write an unsolicited letter of recommendation, which so few folks do these days. He was a real prince that way, and he'll be missed!

While I didn't know Marc for very long, he made a lasting impression. His love of the world around him and passion for living made it a bright and colorful place and his witty humor made, where ever he was, a fun place to be. He will be greatly missed, not only by those that knew him, but by those who don't even know the impact he had on their community and lifes through his generousity.

I only knew Marc briefly through a good friend of my mother's; however, the few times I did meet him, he always had cheer in his heart and a smile on his face. I was fortunate to see him in a production of "70 Girls 70" at Zilkha Hall, and to be a part of last year's BCCM production of "The Secret Garden." I was saddened to learn of his passing, but know his memory will not fade because of the laughter and joy he shared.

You never would have known Marc's age as he was just so energetic and full of life that he could never have been over 70. A quick smile, a sharp wit and always ready to lend a hand. I'm going to miss seeing the endless display of probably the greatest cowboy boot collection in the city. We never fully appreciate someone until there comes the day when you can't pick up the phone and say hello. Too few phone calls, I should have taken more time to enjoy more conversation. To say that he'll be missed doesn't nearly say it all.

I can't tell you how Marc was a treasure to this world. I'm so glad to know him & will miss him. He has such wonderful friends that loved him. thanks to all.
