Marilyn Jankowski Obituary

MARILYN (SWINNEY) JANKOWSKI passed away at home in Pearland on December 12, 2008 after a courageous two year battle with lung cancer. Marilyn was born in Beaumont on October 24, 1944 to Marvin D. Swinney and Doris M. Swinney. She attended Sam Houston State University where she met her loving husband Steve Jankowski. They were married in 1964 and recently celebrated 44 years of marriage. Marilyn and Steve started their married life in Houston and moved to Pearland in 1977. Marilyn is survived by her husband Steve; her daughter Gina (Jankowski) Uvick and husband Chris, of League City; son Stephen Jankowski III, of Pearland; and her mother Doris Swinney of Friendswood. Marilyn had two grandchildren Jared Jankowski and Shana Jankowski, who called her "Gran" and whom she loved dearly. Marilyn devoted five years of service to the Pearland EMS as an Emergency Medical Technician. She also worked with United Space Alliance at NASA before going into business as a Wild Birds Unlimited franchisee in 1995. Her business which started in Clear Lake City and moved to Pearland in 2003, brought her into contact with a multitude of customers, many of whom became her dearest and closest friends. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the many doctors and staff at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center with an extra special thanks to Dr. Carlos Jimenez. A Memorial Service celebrating Marilyn's life will be held 11:00am Saturday, December 20th, at Niday Funeral Home. In lieu of usual remembrances, memorial contributions in Marilyn's name may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston TX 77030, for further lung cancer research.

Mr. Jankowski & family,

My wife Jan and I were devastated by news of Marilyn's death. She was more than our long-time familiar face at her WBU stores.

On one occasion, true to her personality and character, Marilyn went the extra mile for Jan and me. We phoned her to determine if Marilyn's store would be open that evening long enough for us to drive there for our regular purchase of birdseed. Sure enough, Marilyn was on the verge of closing, but she offered to deliver a large bag of bird seed to our Friendswod home, which she did on her way home to Pearland.

Of course we told our family and others of Marilyn's charitable gesture.

As you know better than anyone, Marilyn was a jewel.

Jan & I wish you and yours comfort in the knowledge that the unique and wonderful woman who lived amongst us and the birds she knew and loved so well is now where she's best suited: in heaven.

Growing up in a small town together, Marilyn was a wonderful friend and classmate - with my memories of her going back to early childhood. Energy, joy, laughter, and optimism were a constant in her life. I am both proud and thankful that she was a part of my life and my life's journey.

Marilyn and I were friends in High School. I have always remembered her fondly. She had such a wonderful disposition and was full of laughter. Marilyn was so easy to be around. Joy was one of her many gifts. I know she will be truly missed by her family and all of her friends.

When I came into the store on the 13th, I was shocked to hear the news. Condolensces to Steve and family. I first met Marilyn when I shopped down at Clear Lake and was delighted when you moved to Pearland - so much closer. It was always fun to visit with her at the store. Steve, you and the family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Steve,

I'm so sorry to hear of your great loss. It doesn't seem that long ago that you were telling me about taking little Jared to Kemah to eat shrimpies. I'm sure you have hundreds of fond memories of 44 years of marriage.

My very best to you and your family.

Steve and family:

All of you are in our prayers as you grieve for the loss of Marilyn. We remember seeing Marilyn smiling in the shop in Clear Lake years ago, and I remember Steve talking about how much he enjoyed being with her. It was clear she loved, and was much loved, by many.

God's peace be with you now and always.
