I wanted to take a moment to share a story with you all..
Several months ago, shortly after the Harvey storm, we received a call from a gentleman in the memorial area who had been flooded with 5 feet of water in his house and wanted to have restoration of his metal goods done. Adam and I went to meet and pick up the various items from his home the following morning. This was our very first pickup from a flooded house and we were both taken back by the amount of damage and very large mounds of debris in front of every house in the neighborhood.
We meet with Mr. Martin Bailey, a very polite yet commanding gentleman and could see in his eyes the sheer magnitude of the overwhelming sadness from what had happened to a house he has worked very hard to make into a home. Right away, Mr. Bailey scolded me for showing the respect I was taught to show my peers by my father. As I have heard so many times before, My father was Mr. Bailey, my name is Martin! Please call me Martin! I slipped a few times and called him Mr. Bailey and was promptly reminded, call me Martin! Martin shared his story of being in the military, which I could tell he was very proud of. My father being also in the military, I saw a lot of Dad in Martin and knew right away I wanted to go above and beyond for this man.
Upon finishing up the loading all of the items Martin wanted restored, I was sitting in my truck writing out the invoice to leave with him when I noticed an old lantern sitting in the front floor board that Adam had salvaged from the debris pile in front of Martin's home. I immediately reminded Adam that it was not right to Pick from the debris piles.. Adam right away said Oh I know, but I want to restore this old lantern and give it back to Mr. Martin. This idea Adam had hit me right away as a great idea, so I quickly fabricated a plan. Speaking with Martin about the costs associated with the work we were taking back to the shop and going over the invoice with him, I said in closing, Martin, I just want to let you know, with all that has happened, there will be a light at the end of all of this I know he had no idea what I was speaking about, yet He was very appreciative and thanked us repeatedly for taking the time to come out and pick up his treasured items. Really it was our pleasure to be of service to him!
We were called about a week later, Martin had asked me to retrieve a few more items he had located and wanted to add to the list of items we were working on for him. With Adam having finished up on the little lantern, I sat down and wrote a note to accompany the lantern. I can't recall the exact words but went something like this
Mr. Bailey, when we meet last week to pick up your damaged items and we were going over the invoice, do you remember I told you that there was a light at the end of this tunnel? Well, we found this little lantern in your garbage pile last week. We have restored it for you and want this lantern to represent That light at the end of the tunnel! Although you have lost so much, just know that there is a light to guide you in this trying time.
I did not know at the time, just how profound this small gesture of goodwill would effect Martin. He called in and spoke to Edward on the phone, sobbing in gratification. He shared the story of the lantern with Ed. This little lantern was one of his treasures left by his father and Martin had no idea that it had been thrown away. What it meant to him and the fact that Adams quick decision to salvage it was one of great relief for Martin.
As we later found out, Martin had been sharing this story with everyone he crossed paths with and we feel very proud to be a part of his story
