Mary Low Obituary

Mary Lou Low
1938-2021
Mary Lou Low was born on December 5, 1930, to William 'Bill' Elzie & Gertrude Matthews Low in Geneva, TX, and passed away June 19, 2021, in Houston, TX. Mary Lou attended San Augustine High, where she graduated Salutatorian in 1947. Mary Lou loved her family and her friends, and the lives of those fortunate enough to have known her were better for it. Mary Lou attended Stephen F. Austin University and graduated with honors at the age of 19. At this young age, she began her 46 years of service as a teacher and registrar, earning a master's degree during her first years of teaching.
She was loved and respected by her students throughout her long career. Her grace, humor, integrity, and intelligence commanded respect even at 19, including some students older than she. She taught at Bronson High School for one year and three years at San Augustine High School before moving to Houston to teach at Galena Park High School, where she would work for 42 years. Mary Lou taught advanced mathematics for several decades. She loved teaching and her colleagues and students. Many students kept up with her and she attended numerous student class reunions long after her retirement. She enjoyed reminiscing about her students and receiving updates from them for the rest of her life. She later became the registrar for Galena Park High School, where she remained until she retired in 1996.
She enjoyed traveling with friends and family. She traveled throughout Western and Eastern Europe, North and Central America, and the Caribbean. In addition, she frequently took short trips to out-of-the-way places and flea markets. She was an avid reader and loved to solve crossword and sudoku puzzles. Mary Lou was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Houston for over 60 years and a member of the Oxford Sunday School Class and a United Methodist Women's Circle.
'Aunt Mary Lou' was devoted to her family and was deeply loved by all her nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. She made each of them feel special and unconditionally loved, never forgetting a birthday, graduation, wedding, or special occasion. She dedicated countless weekends to care for them. Two generations of nieces and nephews enjoyed and looked forward to her reading to them and clamored for first dibs to get their back scratched from Aunt Mary Lou. She cared tirelessly for her parents and always placed family first.
Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, her best friend and sister, Paula Beauchamp, her brother-in-law, Paul Beauchamp, and her nephew-in-law, Jay Chenoweth. She leaves behind her much-beloved brother, Gilbert "Buddy" Low of Beaumont, her nephew Dr. Ray Beauchamp and his wife Ann, nephew Bob Beauchamp and his wife Laura, niece Virginia Gray and her husband Melvin, niece Mary Chenoweth, niece Rachael Roane and her husband Stephen, nephew Mark Low and his wife Alison, niece Courteney Myrick and her husband Jason; grandnieces & nephews: Rachel Hanford and her husband Grant, Paul Beauchamp and his wife Bronwyn, Lee Beauchamp, Jack Beauchamp and his wife Hayley, Tom Beauchamp and his wife Christina, George Beauchamp, Jim Beauchamp, John Chenoweth and his wife Courtney, William Chenoweth and his wife Kaitlyn, Terrell Roane, Cameron Roane, Conner Roane, Mary Margaret Roane, Callie Roane, Matthews Low, William Low, Cadien Myrick, Killian Myrick and Emerson Myrick; great grandnieces & nephews: Evelyn Chenoweth, Walker Beauchamp, Charlie Beauchamp, William Beauchamp, Paula Hanford, Hope Beauchamp, and Jay Chenoweth.

Without her would not have gotten through second year Algebra. A very understanding and caring teacher.

Ms. Low was a talented and dedicated geometry teacher at Galena Park High School. I still recall and quote the joke/shortcut she used to help her students remember the Pythagorean theorem. With her creative approach to teaching geometry, I used it often in my years of teaching basic geometry in elementary school . Ms. Low, you rock! Pam Whisenant (Worthington), class of 67.

I did not have the privilege of knowing this lady, only knowing most of her Southeast Texas family . Reading this heartfelt obituary made me want her to read a book to me ❤! Love and prayers for this family
