Mary Wharton Obituary

MARY SELF WHARTON was born January 29, 1937 in Newark Arkansas. She went to be with our Lord on July 7, 2008 in Houston, Texas. Mary was a beautiful ray of sunshine to all whom she knew. She was a devoted wife, and an incredibly loving and supportive mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren will always remember their Mama Weezer as their strongest supporter, biggest encourager, and most steadfast advocate. They were her pride and joy. Mary earned a degree in Microbiology from The University of Houston where she was a loyal alumni. She was a certified Gemologist and very active in the study of Genealogy. She was the ever-present teacher of family history. She was proud of her membership in the Samuel Sorrell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she served on the executive board. She was a patron member of The Junior League of Houston. She was a huge sports fan - whether it be cheering on her grandchildren or listening to the Astros on a transistor radio from her hospital bed. She never missed a U of H athletic event whether in person, on TV or via radio she loved her GO COOGS! God blessed her with an incredible spirit of generosity. She was a faithful and precious friend to all whom had a need. Her legacy is a beautiful and inspiring one. She will be deeply and sorrowfully missed. Mary is preceded in death by her beloved parents Tom and Addie Self and her brother Jim Self. She is survived by her husband R.G. "Hogan" Wharton; children Michael H. Wharton and Mindy Stubbs and husband Tom; grandchildren Lindsi Wharton, Ty Stubbs, and Sarah Stubbs and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial for Mary will be held July 26, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in the A.D. Bruce Chapel on the Campus of the University of Houston. From I 45 either direction take the Cullen Exit toward UofH. Follow Cullen to entrance #13 and proceed toward the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Samuel Sorrel Chapter of DAR C/O Mary Wharton Memorial 5736 W. Airport Houston, Texas 77035

Dear Hogan, Mike, and Mindy,

I have not seen any of you for a while, but have often thought about the times spent together at the sports activities which we all enjoyed as we all grew up together.

My prayers will be with you as you travel through the grieving period. May you know that I am only a phoone call away, or an e-mail.

Love to all of you and your families,

Frances

Dear Hogan,
Nan (our mutual first cousin) called my mother (your uncle Wayne's wife Frances) to let her know of Mary's death. Since our Grandmother's passing over 30 years ago, we have not done a very good job of staying in touch. Mom asked me to do an internet search to find more information. We are so sorry. We will send a memorial as specified of course. Please accept our sympathy and personal regret for not having known Mary better. I do remember always being impressed with my football cousin.

Mike and Lindsi-
We are deeply saddened to hear about such a huge loss to the Wharton family. We know that Lindsi is missing her Weezer in a big way. Having lost our father and Patriarch three years ago, we are aware of what you are all going through. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Hogan and family: I just can't realize that we have lost such a wonderful, beautiful caring person. I am so grateful to have spent time visiting with you and Mary at mine and Harold's 50th anniversary party. Thanks so much for coming. I have some wonderful pictures from that party and also my 70th birthday. I would love to share them with you.

Please know that you and your family are in our prayers and please call on me if I can do something for you. We were friends so long and I will miss her so much.

Love,

Esther Beth and Harold Medley
