Matthew Plummer Obituary

MATTHEW WESLEY PLUMMER, SR., was born April 14, 1920 in San Antonio, Texas to a former slave, Matthew William Plummer of Summerville, Tennessee and Minnie Lee Wilson, a native Texan. He was a student in the public schools of San Antonio, Texas where he graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School. At the age of 17, he entered Tuskegee Institute Trade School as a photographer, earning a certificate in 1939. Following his passion for flying, he began training as an aviator at Tuskegee. Shortly afterwards, the United States Air Corp located the first military flight training program for African-Americans at Tuskegee where he became a flight instructor at the Tuskegee Army Airfield. He trained many of the famous Tuskegee Airmen combat pilots of the 99th Fighter Squadron. The Tuskegee Airmen saw action in North Africa and Europe during World War II. While at Tuskegee, he was very active in civic activities. He served as president of the Tuskegee Civic Club and was one of the founding members of the Tuskegee Branch of the NAACP in 1945. At the conclusion of the war, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in elementary education in 1949. Later that year, he returned to Houston and enrolled in the newly opened law school at the Texas College for Negro Students - currently known as Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law. He graduated in its first class of five students in 1952. Following admission to the Texas State Bar, he became the first African-American employed as an investigator for the Harris County District Attorney's office in 1953. After attempting to integrate the Harris County courthouse cafeteria in 1953, and the consternation created by the act, he resigned from the DA's office and entered private practice specializing in real estate and probate matters until 2000. Judge Plummer was extremely active in the political and civic activities of Houston for over 47 years. He was a founder of the Houston Lawyers Association, the first organized Bar Association for African-American lawyers in Houston; founding member of the Harris County Council of Voters, Texas Council of Voters, the Texas Landowners Association (an organization that sought to stem the loss of rural land, owned by African-Americans across the South), the Bronze Eagles Flying Club (a group of African-American aviators who enjoyed flying as recreation). He served in leadership roles of many other local, state and national organizations including the NAACP Houston Chapter and the National Bar Association. Judge Plummer was appointed by Governor Mark White to the 133rd Civil District in 1986. Other than being proud, supportive, and providing wise advice to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Judge Plummer was especially pleased to have been selected as a special representative of the National Bar Association to meet with President Lyndon B. Johnson to witness the President's desire to name Thurgood Marshall to the United States Supreme Court, and to have served as counsel for Muhammed Ali (one of the Greatest Boxers of all time) in regards to his United States Military draft case. In March of this year, Judge Plummer attended the Congressional Gold Medal Award Ceremony in Washington D.C. where he was among the surviving Tuskegee Airmen presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor in recognition of their service to the country. Honored by this belated recognition, he commented "Little did I realize, when I arrived at Tuskegee at 17 years old, I would have a chance to make a small, but significant contribution to the country." Judge Plummer is preceded in death by his daughter Dianne Letitia Plummer, his father, mother and sister, Agnes Wheelan. He is also preceded in death by his former wife, Hazel Mae Plummer. He is survived by his wife Christine Jones Plummer; four sons: Matthew Wesley Plummer, Jr. (Fursiya), James C.W. Plummer, daughter-in-law, Ava B. Plummer, Fitzgerald L. Plummer (Monique) and Reginald Burke Plummer (Sherry); two step-sons: Alton and Ronald Jones; two nephews: Leonard Ratliff and Elliot Wheelan; seven grandsons: Farouk Omar Plummer, Brian Christopher Plummer, Nicholas Fitzgerald, Reginald Patrick Plummer, Alton Jones III, Christopher Jones and Edwin Pickney; six granddaughters: Dr. Letitia L. Plummer, Dr. Amna M. Plummer-Mays, Morgan Diane Plummer, Reyah Sunshine Plummer, Raigan Faith Plummer and Morgan Lorene Plummer; five great-grand sons: Leonard Shariff Wilson, Maxwell Omar Martin, Harrison Khalil Plummer Martin, Richard L. Mays III and Adam Christopher Salinas-Plummer; two great-granddaughters: Jennifer Amina Mays and Karai Karen Plummer, as well as a host of other grand nieces and nephews. The Celebration of Life Services for Judge Plummer will be 10 AM Saturday, October 27, 2007 at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, 3826 Wheeler. The family of Judge Plummer will receive there extended family and friends at 9 AM prior to service. Dear Family Members,

One of my favorite relatives, Uncle Wesley was warm-hearted, wise and so inspirational. Also, there were many other great accomplishments which I did not know of or were distant memories. I think he was a special man for so many reasons. For one, he chose to walk the individual path not the universal one.

To the immediate family, our toughts, condolences, and prayers from Bobby, Eileen, Joey, Omar and Althea.

Christine and Family:
I extend my sympathy on your loss, but know that you spent a lot of time with your husband during his last days and made them a joy. Being a member of the Wheeler Avenue church family, I anticipated attending the funeral service, but had to attend an extended family member's funeral out of town at the same time. I pray that you will have wonderful memories to sustain you and I will be in touch to personally convey my condolences. May God continue to bless and keep you.

Burke & Fitz,
I am sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I know that the pain is enormous and feels unbearable. I too lost my father, 2 months ago, and the tears haven't stopped yet. Words, expressions, support, and prayers, don't seem to seem to penetrate you or soothe the pain when you lose someone you love very much, but all I can say is to embrace and appreciate them. As the calls and visits become fewer, the true grieving and healing process will begin--the rollercoaster effect. Remember that you haven't lost him, although the physical body in which which you've always known and loved is gone; but each time you look in the mirror, and at your children and siblings, you are looking at a piece of him. I'm still struggling with losing the physical, but thinking about it from this perspective helps. May God bestow comfort and peace to your hearts, minds, and souls.

Sincerely,
Warren/Crystal Arceneaux-Hayward & Family & the entire Arceneaux Family

Judge Plummer had a tremendous impact on my life. Thanks to his wisdom, a once troubled young man like me was enlightened. I finished high school, college and grad school, with his words ringing in my ears. He said, "The only one keeping you from accomplishing great things is you." Thank God for him and God bless his family!

Dear Plummer Family,
You have been enormously favored to have as a patriarch, Judge Matthew Plummer, Sr., a scholar, leader, and visionary, who accepted the challenges of serving his people and his country. I met him as the loving father of my E. O. Smith Junior High schoolmate, who he was teaching to fly an airplane, while instilling a deep love of family and zeal for educational achievement. His legacy shall always be with us. Through his mentorship, our lawyers are better, our rights are more secure and our future more blessed. I share your grief and pray for all of you during this time. With much love,

I am a former President of the Houston Lawyers' Association, the African-American bar association founded by Judge Plummer. Simply put, Judge Plummer was a giant among his peers in the legal profession. His life made Harris County, and Texas better places to practice law for the African-American lawyers who followed him, and better places to live for all of us. Judge Plummer will be missed but his legacy lives on.
