Michael Hill Obituary

Jon Michael Hill
1940-2021
Jon Michael Hill, "Mike", left this world on Sunday, the 4th of April 2021.
Mike was an Ironman triathlon finisher, a rock n' roll keyboardist, a deep sea spear fisherman, an award-winning real estate broker, a Lifetime Director in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and a weekend rancher - cherishing his time on his and Marji's Rockin' H Ranch in Hempstead. He loved riding his favorite horse, Doc, his tractor and "the Mule". Mike challenged himself to be the best he could be in every area of his life, and to have the most fun doing it. As Marji would say, "Mike was always just five seconds away from mischief!"
A proud Houstonian, Mike graduated from Lamar High School and THE University of Texas with a BBA. He then served four years as Lieutenant and Supply Officer in the US Navy, which he considered one of the most important accomplishments of his life.
His business career at CBRE spanned 31 years and included his being named a recipient of the William H. McCarthy Award, the highest award given by CBRE to a broker. He opened Michael Hill Properties in 2002 and remained active until 2 weeks prior to his passing. He loved the art of the deal. In January of 2020, Mike was proudly inducted into the NAIOP Hall of Fame, one of the industries most honored achievements.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Marji; his children, John and Ashley; his children by marriage, Thomas and Sharon Emde and Marc Emde; his four grandchildren, Braedon, Isabel, Tanner and Ryder; and an extended family of brothers-and-sisters-in-law.
A celebration of Mike's life is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 7th of April, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. The service will also be available on Mr. Hill's online tribute page at Geo.HLewis.com.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, 3 NRG Park, Houston, TX, 77054.

Dad,
I couldn’t be there yesterday. John is back the hospital and was too sick to go. I was able to get special permission so he and I could virtually attend your service together from his room at MDACC. Part of my tribute to you which I was unable to share follows:

“....My dad taught me how to be a lady.
To that end, my dad took me on many “dates” as a young girl. I was too young to have appropriate attire for Houston’s finest restaurants but too old to be in children’s clothes. So I would borrow dresses from my mom (which were too big) so I could dress “the part” while he wore his suit and tie. My dad was so proud of his little “date” - cherished moments I will always hold so close. He showed me how to order off of a fancy menu, how to look the waiter in the eye (with respect) while doing so, how to be confident, composed etc
We went to the original Tony’s on Post Oak.
We went to the original Cafe Annie on Westheimer.
We went to the Remington Grill when the Remington was a hotel (now the St Regis) to name a few.
We went frequently -
Just the two of us. It was indeed special.
To this day, he taught me how to handle myself in situations with grace, as a lady and with strength. Specifically he told me “never doubt your instincts, Ashes - they are good”.
He also told me “your habits are not cheap”
“You need to find a way to support those”.
To prepare me, he sent me through a wonderful education and experience at The University of Texas and then private law school to do just that. I will always be grateful.
Those words and actions among many many others, his voice, his laugh, and those cherished memories will live with me forever. I will always love and miss you Dad.”
