Dad,
I couldn’t be there yesterday. John is back the hospital and was too sick to go. I was able to get special permission so he and I could virtually attend your service together from his room at MDACC. Part of my tribute to you which I was unable to share follows:
“....My dad taught me how to be a lady.
To that end, my dad took me on many “dates” as a young girl. I was too young to have appropriate attire for Houston’s finest restaurants but too old to be in children’s clothes. So I would borrow dresses from my mom (which were too big) so I could dress “the part” while he wore his suit and tie. My dad was so proud of his little “date” - cherished moments I will always hold so close. He showed me how to order off of a fancy menu, how to look the waiter in the eye (with respect) while doing so, how to be confident, composed etc
We went to the original Tony’s on Post Oak.
We went to the original Cafe Annie on Westheimer.
We went to the Remington Grill when the Remington was a hotel (now the St Regis) to name a few.
We went frequently -
Just the two of us. It was indeed special.
To this day, he taught me how to handle myself in situations with grace, as a lady and with strength. Specifically he told me “never doubt your instincts, Ashes - they are good”.
He also told me “your habits are not cheap”
“You need to find a way to support those”.
To prepare me, he sent me through a wonderful education and experience at The University of Texas and then private law school to do just that. I will always be grateful.
Those words and actions among many many others, his voice, his laugh, and those cherished memories will live with me forever. I will always love and miss you Dad.”

Mike, I hope there are sail boats and keyboards up there. I will dust off our old sailing trophies and pound my piano for you.
