Michael Smith Obituary

Michael A Smith
1947-2021
Michael Arvel Smith passed away March 2nd, 2021 after a six year fight with cancer. Mike was born July 13th, 1947 to Leslie Eugene Smith and Mary Josephine in Peoria, Illinois. He was raised in Madison, Wisconsin, graduated from Madison West High in 1965, and was, of course, a lifelong enthusiastic Green Bay Packers fan.
Mike entered the U. S. Army in 1967. Became 2nd Lieutenant and was assigned to 82nd Airborne. He then attended Special Warfare School, Jump School, Jump Master School, Language School and Ranger School.
Deployed to Vietnam as Advisory team leader and Provincial Operations Officer directing air and ground operations throughout Vihn Bihn Province. While serving, he was awarded multiple Bronze Stars, air medals, Combat Infantry Badge, Jump Wings, the Vietnamese Gallantry Cross and two Purple Hearts.
After his service, he relocated to Houston, attended and graduated Cum Laude from University of Houston with his degree in Architecture and eventually became partner with Cole Smith Associates.
He coached West University Little League, was a charter member of both the Houston City Club and Country Place Club and was involved in the St Patrick's parade commission, Houstonian's for Ireland and was Chairman of the Irish Open Golf Tournament in Houston.
He was married to, and had two sons with, Carolyn Grannis Smith.
From 1995 until his passing, he was happily married to Stephanie Smith(Zimmerman) with whom, during their 25 years together enjoyed traveling to many exotic locales including the Caribbean, Costa Rica, the Panama Canal and of course their favorite watering hole, Ron's Pub.
In addition to his wife and sons, Dustin(married to Lori) and Sean, he is survived by his grandchildren: Ahnan, Wilona, Sienna, and Brynn and many in laws and great friends.
Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Ron's Pub on Saturday March 6th from noon until 3pm.

Play this is sad news to see. I knew Mike back long time ago in the day when me and my husband Ray used to own the season-ticket and Houston by the summit he used to come in all the time. What a great guy I have many many pictures and many good times with him.

Stephanie and Mike were almost our first friends at Ron's. He was full of personality and interesting, helping us with the car category. It was nice to be included in the "fun" group. It is hard to say good bye.
Stephanie, our prayers.

Dear Stephanie,
Mike will be missed greatly, especially when we need a trivia answer about cars. Or to recommend manly written books. Truly a great guy, Donda aka The Ladies

Mike was such a vital part of our “gang” (our traveling family) for so many years. He was a born leader and loved to put groups together and make sure everything ran smoothly. He liked being “in charge” even though he would always deny it. There was only one Mike Smith and he will be truly missed.

Mike worked for our firm, Stewart Consulting Associates, for 21 years and his years of experience as an architect and field consultant significantly contributed to the success of the company. Working closely with him on a near daily basis for 16 years provided the training I needed to learn this business. I'd never known anyone who was better at time management, and he could practically do the job in his sleep. He taught me so much and to the point that I was able to take over the business from my Dad, Frank Stewart, when he retired in 2010. "Thank you, Mike, for all you did!" He fought the good fight for 6 years and we're so sorry he had to leave us. He will be greatly missed. I pray for comfort and peace for his wife, Stephanie, his sons and grandchildren, whom he always spoke about with pride and with a smile on his face.
