Patrick Lopez Obituary

Patrick George Lopez
1937-2018
Patrick George Lopez died on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 after a brief stay in hospice. He was born in Houston on January 7, 1937 to Manuel and Carmen Lopez. He married Barbara Jean Holman in 1961. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, his children (Claudia, Patrick, and Sarah), his grandchildren (Patrick Joey and Justin), and his brother (John David). As an architectural delineator, he worked with some of the most important national and local architects and architectural firms of the post WWII era, including Skidmore Owings and Merrill, Johnson Burgee, and Helmut Jahn. He loved his family, his lifelong home of Houston, his pets (Oso!), baseball, the Astros, art, buildings, music (he was a lifelong piano player), fishing, plants (he grew orchids, bromeliads, succulents), and a good meal. A public memorial will be held in the future at an as-yet undetermined date.

I was very young when I met Pat. My dad Tim Hagerty would take me to visit. But even though I was young I can absolutely remember his kindness to me. I can actually remember a feeling of genuine niceness to me and not a fake nice like some people will give kids. I felt absolutely welcomed in his home. That has always stayed with me.

Meeting Pat seemed like it was somehow pre-ordained for me. His artwork for our Early Houston Baseball book was phenomenal, and specifically he brought life to a long forgotten 19th century Houston baseball park. It was a gift to the historical record of the city that both of us loved very much. More than that was the opportunity to become friends with such a wonderful soul. My deepest condolences to the Lopez family. It is such a blessing to have known Patrick Lopez.

What an interesting person! Of course he had to be very special to help create one of my all-time favorite people. I know he was proud to have a son like you. All my love, Patrick Lopez.

I miss his humor, his artistry, his love and enthusiasm about his plants, but most, I miss his joy at being in the bosom of his family. Salud!

To privately view a Bergman, Fellini, or Kubrick film with Pat, and absorb his running commentary, was a feast of urbanely cool insight. One always left a conversation with him feeling charmed by his warm wit, and a better person for having shared his expansive informed takes on the passing parade illuminated by great artists.

This is a beautiful tribute to Patrick. I have many very fond memories of days spent with your family when our children were young. The fishing trips Patrick and Jim went on and the delicious fried fish dinners caused many laughs at the mess these funny men made. Patrick will be sharing these memories with Jim where they are in heaven
