PAUL WAHLBERG Obituary

PAUL S. WAHLBERGMay 24, 2010 - Paul peacefully left this world to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There he will be joyfully reunited with Beverly, his wife of 52 years, who preceded him in death in 2001.Paul was a native Houstonian, born June 4, 1928 the third of four children to Philip and Ella Wahlberg. He grew up on Arlington Street in the Houston Heights. He graduated from Reagan High School in 1946, where he was a cheerleader, captain of the track team, and voted most popular in his senior year. It was at Reagan that he met Beverly Bezpatka, the love of his life, whom he married in 1949.Paul was a member of the Texas A&M Class of 1950 and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in architecture. His college career was interrupted by a call to the Army where he earned a rank of 2nd Lieutenant. After discharge he resumed his studies at A&M and earned his degree in 1955.After graduation in 1955, Paul opened his architectural firm. Over the next 49 years, Paul's firm would go on to design projects of all types in over 23 states. He had an uncanny ability to sell a job, put owners and lenders together, and supervise the construction until completion. He just knew what made a project "work".Paul was dedicated to the charitable endeavors of The Houston Golf Association. He was a member of the HGA for 52 years, President in 1970, and was named an honorary director in 2002. He was one of only three honorary directors appointed since 1946. Paul's enthusiasm for the HGA will live on in the form of The Paul Wahlberg Helping Hand Award. This award is given annually to a deserving individual for dedicated service to the community, the game of golf, THE PGA TOUR, and the Houston Golf Association.Paul's generosity of time and resources is alive and well at Texas A&M. He and Beverly provided a permanently endowed 12th Man Foundation Scholarship in 1978. A long time supporter of A&M Athletics, especially golf, Paul provided a new home for the A&M Men's and Women's golf teams. The Paul Wahlberg '50 Aggie Golf Learning Center is a state of the art practice facility that is recognized as one of, if not the finest in the country. The Aggie Men's Golf Team put it to good use winning the 2009 NCAA National Championship, the first in school history. Coach J.T. Higgins recognized Paul's part in this milestone by presenting him with a national championship ring.Paul is survived by his brother Philip, sisters Marie Kleckley and Martha Eastwood, son Jeff, daughter-in-law Judy, and beloved granddaughter Jaclyn. Paul enjoyed going to the auto races to watch Jeff's customers' engines run. He loved Judy's cooking and conversation. He loved anything about Jaclyn - from watching her sleep to going to and cheering at probably 10,000 athletic events she participated in. Soccer, volleyball, track, and swimming - he was "all in". He loved working at his farm. He loved mowing grass and talking to his cows. He loved life. He loved to take the time to make others' lives better. He will forever be an inspiration to all who knew him. He did it right.Pallbearers include Terry Russ, Coach Bob Ellis, Duke Butler, Robert H. Allen, Peter Mpefo, and Greg Ortega.Honorary pallbearers include Thomas Nyingo, Gary Nine, The Men and Women of Aggie Golf and the Men and Women of the HGA.Donations can be made in Paul's memory to The Houston Golf Association or Texas A&M Golf.Visitation from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Thursday May 27, 2010 at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home.Funeral Services 10:30 a.m. Friday May 28, 2010 at Forest Park Lawndale Chapel.Interment Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.

To a very special person,

First and foremost I can't say thank you enough, especially to God who allowed me to meet Mr.Paul and who gave me such a great friendship with him. I thank Mr.Paul for all the great times he allowed me to share with him! He is a person who I will never forget and someone who I will always miss and love!!

I first met Mr. Paul working at DiIorio's in Hempstead. I will never forget the time his car broke down... He was not a happy camper! I gave him a ride home that evening and the rest was history... It is a friendship that I will cherish for the rest of my life!

My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family always!

Love Always,
Kimberly Avery, Class of '04

I met Mr. Wahlberg over 20 years ago at his office where my MIL Judy Gutierrez was his secretary for over 35 years. Almost 8 years ago he moved into the Assisted Living where I was the Administrator. My favorite memory is when another resident gave Mr. Wahlberg the Hook EM Horns sign and asked him if he knew what that meant. Mr. Wahlberg then gave him another sign and asked him if he knew what that meant. He was an instant star. Even when he needed the help of others, Mr. Wahlberg still knew how to make others feel appreciated. It was an honor to first know him as a friend then as one of my residents. Thanks so much for the laughs.

God blessed us with your presence and He will reward you greatly in Heaven. You will be missed by so many, but I'm pleased that Earl will have his good friend at his side again....

Growing up across the street from the Phil Wahlberg family was a precious time in my life. Paul was the center of all activity in that household. He loved to tease his Mother, Ella and enjoyed playing with the neighborhood children.
Paul was an inspiration to everyone in the neighborhood and loved by all. But now he is in a much better place and will again reunite with his parents, grandparents cousins and Beverly.
Martha, Ella Marie, Phil and Jeff and family, you will all miss Paul but so will all his friends. My prayers are with you at this time.

To A Special Friend,

The day I got the news of your passing into heaven, there was a void in my heart only God knows. There is no other friend like you that could ever fill this void. I thank God and I thank you for the memories that I have. The times we went to the big H to watch Jeff's cars race, the times on Sunday mornings at the golf course, and the times working at the farm. I thank God for bringing you into my life. I thank God for the opportunities of being your employee. You will be greatly missed!!! Your kindness, caring, and love shined through. The advise and inspiration--well taken!!!!!!!!
You have made me a better man!!
Your True Friend,

Paul Wahlberg was a great promoter of golf in Houston and his leadership and dedication will be missed by all who benefitted from his gifts. As a Golf Professional in Houston for over 40 years I and my family knew what the help of the HGA meant to the growth of golf in our area. Paul was a wonderful giving man and he will be missed by all who knew him.

I answered an ad in The Leader newspaper for a part time receptionist job over 12 years ago. Little did I know how that one single action would change the course of my life.

After I passed the spelling test, Mr. Wahlberg interviewed me and then subsequently hired me to help out on Fridays in his Architectural Firm. The part-time job soon turned into full time (in true Paul fashion) and also led to me helping him with his "golf" work.

The "golf" work was for the Houston Golf Association dealing with the charities they supported. Soon the HGA hired me to be their staff person for the charity aspect. It was also through the HGA that I met my wonderful husband and now have a 6 year son. I am where I am because of Paul.

I have had numerous phone calls from charity representatives and from people who were helped by a charity who have said the same thing - their story would not be the same if it weren't for Paul.

Paul had such an impact on everyone he met. His passion for his family, Texas A&M and the HGA was larger than life itself. We are all better for knowing him. He will truly be missed.

I was Paul Wahlberg’s personal assistant for 32 years. I told him about a year ago that both of us were young when I started to work for him. He laughed about that. I was in my 30's, and Paul was in his late 40's. We have had a great relationship. I loved him very much and he loved me. I can truly say that he was the smartest man I ever knew. He could solve any problem. He was enthusiastic about the HGA and Texas A&M.

His granddaughter Jaclyn was the love of his life. He adored her. Now he is at peace joining his wife Beverly in Heaven. After Paul's stroke, Paul’s son Jeff saw that Paul was well-taken care of and that he had everything he needed or desired. I will miss Paul greatly. I love Jeff, Judy, and Jaclyn and they will always be my adopted family.

Houston lost a real gentleman in Paul Wahlberg, a true Aggie, a fine architect, and a supporter of many charities. I remember him most as perhaps the number one fan of major city fast pitch softball during the 60's, as he was always in the stands supporting those of us playing the game we loved. I also remember that Paul had a terrific smile that he shared with everyone. He will be missed.

I would not be in business today if it were not for Paul Wahlberg. Other archtitects did not want to take a chance on a start up company but Paul did. He drew every apartment we built for the first ten years the Verandah Companies was in business. He lent me the voice of his experiece and the kindness of his heart.

Paul loved his Houston Golf Association and Texas A&M University. When I inquired of him once how he found the time to do so much charity work and run his business his reply was,"you just put in more hours and make it happen". Paul always made it happen,no matter what "it" was.

He would show up on the jobsite in his Mercedes sportscar and dressed in coverall's with tape measure in hand and tell you in no uncertain terms if you built it good enough for him to pass the inspection and approve your construction draw. He was a stickler and we are all the better for it.

Even when he did not approve the draw he still expected you to buy a table at whatever charity event he was involved in for HGA or TAMU.....and we all did. Who would have the nerve to turn Paul Wahlberg down?

The Verandah Companies was probably the smallest client Paul had, but he was always there for us when we needed him.

An entreprenuer, an architect, a golfer and a friend. They do not make them like Paul Wahlberg anymore, truly a special breed.
