Peter Meyer Obituary

Peter Staub Meyer
1933-2021
Peter Staub Meyer "Petesie", age 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, the 3rd of January 2021. Peter was born on the 25th of July 1933 in New York, NY, the second child of Cecilia "Ceci" Gerdes Meyer and Harry Frederick Meyer.
Peter was preceded in his death by his parents and is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judith Payne Meyer; son John Staub Meyer and wife Jana Edge Meyer; son Peter Frederick Meyer and wife Jessica Jones Meyer; grandchildren Peter Staub Meyer II and Emma Jane Meyer; brother Harry Frederick Meyer Jr. and wife Bodil Meyer along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Growing up in Darien, CT, Peter enjoyed an idyllic lifestyle of ice skating on ponds and sailing on Long Island Sound at the Noroton Yacht Club and the Tokeneke Club with his family. He was proud to have attended Deerfield Academy where he enjoyed playing lacrosse and ice hockey with occasional games played at Madison Square Garden. Peter went on to attend Yale University where he was an active member in the Deke fraternity and secret society. Following Yale, Peter attended Officer Candidate School and proudly served as a naval officer in the United States Navy aboard the USS Herbert J. Thomas (DD 833), which was a part of the Pacific Fleet.
After honorable discharge from the Navy, Peter returned to New York to work in the financial industry with Dominick and Dominick in Manhattan. He spent his spare time on the water where he enjoyed cruising and racing sailboats with longtime friends and mentors, Jake and Terry Hershey, aboard the Ca Va I & Ca Va II, where they won several regattas including the Nassau Cup.
Peter then moved to San Francisco and ultimately to his final destination of Houston, TX. In Houston, Peter was well received by many in business and society and most importantly, met his loving wife, Judy. They married in 1973 and had two sons, John and Peto, of whom he was so proud.
Peter joined Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor where he worked the remainder of his life and recently retired in September of 2020 as a Senior Vice-President. Peter loved going to the office, watching the markets and creating wealth for his clients. Often when the markets were up and a client called to say hello and ask how he was doing, his response would be "I am great, the screen is green".
Peter was quickly introduced to the warm waters of Galveston Bay and the Texas Corinthian Yacht Club, where he was a member for over 50 years and served as Commodore. There he spent much of his free time with his family and friends, often racing sailboats and cruising on his trawler. Peter was also a long-time member of the New York Yacht Club and the River Oaks Country Club.
Peter enjoyed family trips to the East Coast and throughout the Caribbean, watching his kids play sports, making sure flags were correctly positioned on any flag pole, walking the docks and shipyards admiring boats and occasionally cutting up with a glass of wine and friends at the end of the day. He took pleasure in meeting new people, making everyone feel welcome and telling stories about his life. Friends describe Peter as generous, a true gentleman, dedicated, passionate, caring and optimistic with a fond love for his family and friends. Lastly, Peter will be remembered for his devout love of his childhood, schools he attended, stories of time spent in the Navy, boating at the TCYC & NYYC, his affinity for red pants along with his wit, humor and kindness.
Bravo Zulu, Peter Meyer, Bravo Zulu!
A private memorial service will be held at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, officiated by Rev. Dr. Doug Richnow. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Peter Staub Meyer Memorial Fund with the Galveston Bay Foundation https://galvbay.org/donate/; or mail in donations to 1725 Highway 146, Kemah, TX 77565.

I always enjoyed taking care of Mr. Meyer and his wife Mrs. Judy Meyer at Collinas Italian cafe. I have consistently taken care of them for the past three years at Collinas. Every time I saw them I knew exactly what they wanted and always gave him all of the anchovies he could eat for his linguini marinara! I am grateful I was able to get to know them these past couple of years. He always appreciated that i remembered him as the “anchovie man”. Thank you for your letter Mrs Meyer. I will forever cherish it. I love you both and am so sorry for your loss Mrs Judy. I will forever feel fortunate that I got to witness true love.

Dear Judy and the entire Meyer family, Ann and I were so saddened to hear of Peter’s recent passing. Peter was a good friend and colleague for over 30 years at Merrill. We shared many good times together and many good laughs together. Peter was the consummate professional, a true icon at Merrill, a pro’s pro. Rest In Peace, my friend. You are a great mensch.

I worked with Peter at Merrill Lynch and always enjoyed our conversations, usually about private equity investments his clients had made or were considering. He was a true gentleman.

Meyer Family, My heart is sad to hear of Peter's passing. I worked at the same branch but did not directly assist him. That doesn't mean that his smile and sweet and kind soul did not touch me. I send prayers for peace, strength and patience - PEACE: to remember that he is at rest with our Father; STRENGTH: for your family during this difficult time and PATIENCE with yourselves as you take the time to grieve.

I used to race sail boats with Peter in the '60's and early 70's. We lost touch as I was younger and went off to grad school. Peter was a class act. Best wishes to his family.

Judith, John, and Peter,
So sorry to hear of your loss. Had great times sailing with him and working with him at Dominick and Dominick and watching our boys play at EHS. He, Sam Dodd and I shared the institutional sales office, our form of rebellion against the rules of AKM, was to not wear our jackets while working. LOL
