Philip Lewis Obituary

Dr. Philip Lewis , 91, died August 11, 2012. Dr. Lewis, an optometrist, was a native Houstonian. Throughout his illustrious career he contributed greatly toward the advancement of his profession. In 1975 he was appointed by the governor of Texas to represent optometry on the State Board of Health; he served as President of the Texas Optometric Association and chaired its Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee; and was a member of the Texas Board of Examiners-Optometry. As a member of the greatest generation, Dr. Lewis served honorably in World War II as a first lieutenant and company commander in the U.S. Army in both the European and Pacific theaters. Dr. Lewis is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lena Lewis. He is survived by Marcia Lewis, his wife of 51 years; sister, Freda Fox; and brother, Dr. Bernard Lewis, and his wife Dr. Hanna Lewis. Surviving children are Andrea Cook and her husband Dan; Judy Turpie and her husband Tom, Stephen Lewis and his wife Cynda; Ralph Lewis and his wife Betsy, and Mitchell Lewis. Grandchildren include Jordan, Anna, Julia, and Erica Lewis, David Turpie, and Lindsey Bozeman. He also leaves five great grandsons. There will be a graveside service at Emanu El Cemetery, 8341 Bissonnet St. on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Philip was dear to me. I was always grateful for the way he loved my children and I admired the bond of loving partnership he and my beloved Marcia shared. I will remember him always and pray blessings of peace and comfort be upon all who mourn his passing.
