Richard Bufkin Obituary

RICHARD EARL BUFKIN, age 48, passed away September 19, 2006, after an illness. Rick was born on February 15, 1958, in Corpus Christi, and lived in the Pasadena area for many years. He attended Smiley High School and proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine. In 1987, Rick met Shiela Gail Shields in a Laundromat in Vidor and married her two years later. Rick had four great passions: his wife, fishing, photography and playing the guitar. He was mean poker player and a kind boss. Rick was preceded in death by his father John Earl Bufkin and brother John Bufkin. He is survived by his wife, Shiela; daughter Kim Tamayo (and husband Joe); granddaughter Jordan Gonzalez; mother Mary Ann Fitts; sister Pam Hicks (and husband John); step-mother Virginia Bufkin; step-sisters Regina Ives (and husband Russell), Alicia Bustamante (and husband Joe), and Elizabeth Barlley (and husband Ty); step-brother David Bufkin; sister-in-law Mary Bufkin; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend and "adopted" daughter, Melissa Gau. A memorial service was held Wednesday at Rosewood Funeral Home in Pasadena.

Two things stand out in my memory of Rick in relationship to his brother, my husband, John. The first year John and I were married (1977), Rick was home on leave from the Marines and John and Rick were having a Star Wars fashioned light saber fight in their Mom's back yard at night. Their weapons of choice were roman candles and garbage can lids as shields. (Don't try this at home--very dangerous!) But I will always remember it. The second thing I will always remember is the day of John's Memorial Service and Rick's saluting as my son carried John's ashes out into the water. This was an ultimate sign of respect coming from Rick and I will never lose sight of that moment in my mind. I look forward to seeing Rick again someday with his brother and father.
