Richard Byrd Obituary
1928-2016
Named after the Admiral, "Dick" Byrd was born and raised in the Houston Heights attending Hamilton Jr. High and John H. Reagan High Schools. He graduated from SMU with a degree in geology and from Columbia with a Masters degree in Paleontology. Having met at SMU Richard and Mary Frances Richey were married in Washington, D. C. After serving in the Navy on the USS Prevail Richard moved his family to New Orleans to start the geology lab for Texaco. In the 60's they followed the Texaco oil business to Houston. After more than 40 years with Texaco Dick retired to enjoy time at his Hallettsville farm, to teach at the Vance prison unit and to vacation with his family.
Preceded in death by his parents and siblings Richard is survived by Mary Frances, his wife of 65 years; his children Diane Wooten (Sherman) and Tom Byrd (Cindy); grandchildren Richard Wooten (Shannon) and Nathaniel Wooten (Cristina); great granddaughter Kalea.
Viewing 9:30-10:30; funeral 10:30am on April 8 at Faith United Methodist Church Richmond TX. Interment at Veterans Cemetery on April 12 at 2:15pm.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the science department of St. Francis de Sales School 8100 Roos Houston 77036.
