Richard J. Ford, Jr. M.D., Ph.D.
Richard J. Ford, Jr. M.D., Ph.D., 77, of Houston, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2021 surrounded by his loving wife.
A prominent member of Houston's medical community, Richard served most recently as Clinical Professor in the Department of Hematopathology, Division of Pathology/Lab Medicine at The MD Anderson Cancer Center
. He also held the title of being a Distinguished Senior Lecturer at The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
He was born on September 28, 1943 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to parents Richard Ford, Sr. and Ruth Lake Ford. Richard grew up in San Francisco, California and then Detroit, Michigan and did his undergraduate study at Wayne State University in Detroit. His medical education took him around the country to institutions such as Washington University in St. Louis, MO and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, with additional pathology study in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
Dr. Ford began his long road in academic research with a position at The MD Anderson Cancer Center
in 1976 in Pathology and Lab Medicine. He went on to teach at The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences which began a distinguished career in medicine and academics, spanning more than four decades as a pathology research professor. Dr. Ford led teams of students and colleagues alike in pursuit of one of his great passions: the health of his patients.
His love of the study of medicine will live on through the continued work of his students and colleagues, who all strive to serve their fellow man through the advancement of our understanding of the human condition and the pathologies that may unlock the key to health, longevity, and lives well-lived.
Richard's true passion in his early high school years was music. He dreamed of one day becoming a conductor. One of his greatest disappointments in life was when his music teacher told him he wasn't talented enough to become a successful conductor so he became a doctor instead.
Richard is preceded in death by his both his parents and two loving aunts, Natalie and Jeanne.
He is survived by his loving wife, Young Shin Kim Ford; his stepmother Vera Ford, and numerous other family members and friends.
A Celebration of Richard's Life is set for Sunday evening, July 11, 2021 from four o'clock until seven o'clock in the evening with the service starting at six o'clock at Bradshaw-Carter Memorial & Funeral Services, 1734 W.
