Robert Gonsoulin Obituary

Robert F. Gonsoulin, Jr.
1927-2015
Robert F. Gonsoulin, Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, September 13, 2015, at the age of 89. Witnessing his passage to heaven and into the arms of our Lord – Jesus Christ, was his loving wife of 61 years - Frances M. Gonsoulin and son, Gregory P. Gonsoulin. Robert (Bob) was born in New Iberia, LA on January 15, 1927 to Robert F. Gonsoulin, Sr. and Elma M. Bourgeois, both deceased. Bob is survived by Frances M. Gonsoulin, their six children, Paula Ludwigson (Al), Rose Mensik (Marvin), Margaret Lawler (Jeff), David Gonsoulin (Cecile), Gregory Gonsoulin (Mei) and Holly Hellinghausen (Doug), brothers, Dewey J. Gonsoulin (Beaumont, TX), and Dr. Thomas Gonsoulin, and numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and Lucy Bea, his first grandchild. Bob is predeceased by son-in-law David McKechnie (Paula). Bob grew up in Houston, TX and graduated from St. Thomas High School in 1944, then went on to Tulane University and graduated early in 1947. Bob was also a Korean War veteran and began his service at Fort Riley, KS and after his honorable discharge settled in Houston with Frances after marrying on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1954. Bob was a meticulous professional for 40 years as one of Houston's most respected Real Estate Appraisers, and was a distinguished member of the Member Appraisal Institute (MAI) and Society of Real Estate Appraisers (SREA). But, for all of Dad's many accomplishments in his professional life, he would always be most proud of his family. It started with the many trips to family events and summer vacations, then the "the farm" near Sugarland, TX. For over 30 years the farm provided so many family fun Saturday cookouts/picnics and Sunday morning breakfasts. Dad enjoyed dove hunting, riding Big Red, Pancho and Susie, and hammock naps in the quiet country. Dad had a wonderful life with Mom and although traveled quite frequently, they enjoyed their home in Sea Isle, Galveston most. The "beach house" is the place he and Mom would entertain, fish, swim in the Gulf, beachcombed and most of all - provide a place for family and friends to congregate, tell stories and just be together. Summer visits to the beach by the grandchildren became regular family reunions, creating some of the most cherished memories. As a family, we could not have had a more caring, gentle and loving father. We all miss him very much but happy he's reunited with his father and mother in heaven. To Kimberly, you and Paisley (in picture) did so much for Dad's happiness, thank you. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Autumn Leaves – Cinco Ranch in Katy for all of their support and kindness during his stay. In lieu of flowers, Dad would recommend donations to the Star of Hope and Salvation Army. The family will have a funeral mass at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 10am, on October 17, 2015.

We are deeply saddened to hear of Bob's passing, we found out just today. Bob and Frances have been friends with my parents for as long as I can remember, so I feel like they have been in my life since I was a child. In recent years with our summer trips to Galveston I have grown quite fond of both of them. We always made a point of stopping by their beach house for a visit. We all shared a love of Galveston Island, and Bob was always sharing fishing stories with my husband and I. He was a terrific man with an uncanny way of telling a story that drew you in, and a sense of humor that made you want to be around him. Besides his great personality, I loved him for being a loving friend to my parents. They certainly don't make them like Bob anymore.

What a great, great loving man. As a child, I thought of him as the friendliest, most cheerful person in the room.
