Roy Bucek Obituary

Roy Edmund Bucek was born February 17, 1920 in Velehrad, TX to Roy Bucek Sr and Otillie Schwartz Bucek.
He grew up in Freyburg, attended high school in Schulenburg, and became an accomplished athlete. He earned a scholarship to Texas A&M College where he played on the 1939 National Championship football team and was All-American in track.
He served in the army only to lose an eye in the Battle of the Bulge. After recuperating, he served as the assistant Dean of Men at Texas A&M. A few years later, Roy came home to Schulenburg and bought into the Schulenburg Locker Service, which later became Oakridge Smokehouse. He married Vera Veenstra from Highlands, Texas in 1949. He had many successful businesses in his life; the most notable was the Oakridge Smokehouse Restaurant in Schulenburg.
He received many honors. Roy passed away February 24, 2012 in LaGrange, Texas and was buried February 27, 2012. He will be missed by many, but especially by his family.

My sincere condolences on the loss of Roy Bucek. My great uncle, J.W. Rollins, was the Dean of Men at Texas A&M, who is mentioned in the obituary. He had coached Roy in the 1939 championship team as an assistant football coach, when he was the head track coach at A&M. He obviously thought very highly of him and I am sure that he found Roy's assistance when he was dean to be of great value. Thank you so much for sharing the story of Roy's life.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Rollins Hays
