Dear Joyce, please accept our deepest sympathies for your whole family upon the loss of a truly great man. We had the opportunity to know him for so many years and to see all of his good works. How we remember his wonderful contributions to all of the things he took on. There were so many including the American Heart Association where his help was so important to so many. May he rest in Peace!

In the course of a man’s life, there are precious few opportunities to make a real difference. Rarer still are those men who take these opportunities and make the world a better place for all of us. Men like this are special and they come along only rarely. Samuel Eugene (Gene) Murphree, Jr., was just this type of man.
In the face of tragedy, he refused to be defeated. When he lost his beautiful, young daughter Eileen to leukemia, he somehow found the courage, the commitment, and the determination to help those who had to walk the same path. His strength was inspirational and his concern genuine.
But, in the end, if we gain strength from his courage, if we gain knowledge from his encouragement, then he will still be with us. We will miss him but we will know his hand continues to guide our efforts. In that, we are truly blessed.
We at the Eileen Murphree McMillin Blood Center are so grateful to Gene, his wife, Joyce, his son Dennis and wife Penny Murphree, and many friends of the Murphree family. Their support of our Blood Center led to the early development of blood stem cell and bone marrow transplantation at The Methodist Hospital along with other advances in Transfusion Medicine.
Sincerely,
Chris M. Leveque, M.D. and David H. Yawn, M.D.

I remember Gene as a genuine "man's man" with a great sense of humor. I admired his integrity and honor. Houston has lost a valuable asset in his death.
