Dr. Samuel Stal,
June 29th, 1950
August 13th, 2012
Dr. Samuel Stal, 62, passed away on Monday, August 13th from complications related to multiple myeloma. He crossed over peacefully, in the comfort of his own home, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Munich, Germany, to Rose and Morris Stal, the family sought a fresh start after the Holocaust and relocated to the suburbs of Chicago. After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Sam earned his Doctorate of Medicine at Loyola University outside of Chicago. He completed post-graduate training programs in Chicago, Houston, and France, where he became board-certified in both otolaryngology and plastic surgery. His hard work and dedication earned him full professorship in the Department of Surgery and the position of Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital, where he practiced for over 30 years.
Sam's two great passions were teaching medicine and helping children with craniofacial, cleft lip and palate deformities. His focus on helping children led to his founding of the TCH Center for Facial Surgery, whose objective was the treatment children regardless of their financial status. He also loved coaching others through their formative years and serving as a mentor for countless residents, fellows and physicians over the years.
Sam is survived by his wife Linda; sons David, Drew, and Brian; his siblings Aaron and Helen; and his father Morris. He also leaves behind a multitude of friends, colleagues, and students who all played very important roles in his life.
A memorial celebration of his life has been scheduled for 3:00 PM, Wednesday, August 15th at the Levy Funeral Home located at 4525 Bissonnet. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to Texas Children's Hospital - Plastic Surgery Division.

I was a patient of Doctor Stal's since I was 1. He performed all of my surgeries up to end of high school. I'm now 39 and I've lived in California most of my life. I would fly to Texas for all of my surgeries b/c we had so much trust in Samuel's work. He was was always very warm hearted and had a strong hand shake that I'll never forget. Disappointed to hear that he passed but it's nice to be able to reconnect to his remembrance after his passing. Much love to you Sam! Thank you for my face!

My deepest sympathy to your family. Dr. Stal came into our life in 1982 when he did his first of many surgeries on my son until he was 20 years old. We are forever grateful to him.
I remember the first time I met him after my son's surgery; he drew what he had done in surgery on his scrub pants. He was so genuine, I could see his the goodness of his heart in his eyes. He was such a wonderful soul.

He will be missed by all who were touched by this great man!

When my son was born in 1992 and we met Dr. Stal for the first time a month after his birth, I knew that Dr. Stal would play an important part in my son's life. He was an exceptionally good hearted, caring, compassionate person. My son had over 11 different surgeries all related, and through them all Dr. Stal cared enough to ask how they each went even when they weren't with Plastic. My son and I just found out today of Dr. Stal's passing. We had tried to contact him the last few years and left messages and sent emails to the office but we weren't made aware of what happened until today. My son will be heartbroken as he called me this morning to tell me how he was going to try again to contact Dr. Stal to tell him that he was trying his best to pursue something in medicine and wanted Dr. Stal to know how he had inspired him. Dr. Stal always said he wanted to help Matthew in any way he could. He did by teaching him how important it is to make a difference , while we are still alive. God bless you Dr. Stal. You are never forgotten and are always with us.

I was browsing the web today and showing my husband how wonderful Dr.Stal was. To my surprise I find his obituary and tears started flowing. I love this man. He did amazing work on my son, Benny, who had bi-lateral cleft lip and palette. When you experience something like cleft lip and palette, you form a close bond with your child's surgeon. My son is now 18 and thanks to Dr.Stal, when my son smiles his whole face smiles and melts my heart. Dr.Stal and his talents will be greatly missed by many. My prayers go out to his family.

Dr. Stal will be greatly missed by many, many families. My 3 grandsons have a genetic facial syndrome and were all be treated by Dr. Sta. He performed several surgeries on each. He was a kind and gentle and made you feel confident that you chose the right doctor. Their current ages are 21, 17 and 7. I would get so tickled, he remembered each one of them and would often call them by one of the other bothers' name. He was a blessing to our family and will be greatly missed.

Dr. Stal performed surgeries on me as a kid. im now 43. he is the one person that introduced the word "Confidence" to me as a child. after about 20 yrs. i looked for him to take him and his family to a nice dinner but it was while he was sick. i am so glad that i did get to talk to him via e-mail. i told him that i felt that it was time for me to give back, so i was in the process of volunteering for children with cleft. i have been looking for some place to volunteer or even sponsor a child with cleft. if anyone has any info please let know. My condolences go out to Dr. Stal's family, friends, & co-workers. He was a great doctor that treated my now 16 year old daughter. We truly were blessed when we were transferred to Houston from El Paso, Tx not knowing latter in the year my daughter Alyssa would be born with a cleft lip & palate. We were in the best place for her to be treated by a top surgeon in the field. I know that it wasn't "by chance" ended up in Houston, it was planned by the big Man upstairs. I thank God everyday. After moving back to El Paso 14 years ago, we have been traveling back to Houston for Alyssa's doctor visits and surgeries. Unfortunately, Dr. Stal was not able to see Alyssa our last two visits to Houston; he was out on medical leave. I wish we could have thanked him one last time. There will be a huge void at Texas Children's now.
Rest in peace Dr. Stal.

I was born with a cleft lip and palate 19 years ago. From the time I was born, Dr. Stal gave advise, comfort, and hope to my family. When I heard of his passing, I completely broke down. Not only was he a friend but felt like a part of our family. He had done every surgery on me from the time I was born up until he got sick. Now in college, I've decided to go down the career path of working with children born with cleft palates, with the dream of working under him. Condolences go out to the Stal family, coworkers, and patients who are dealing with this sad news. I thank Dr. Stal from the bottom of my heart for making me beautiful everyday. God bless,

My son Ethan was born with a cleft lip and palate. Being first time parents we did not know what to expect. However, the Lord blessed us by putting Dr. Stal in our lives. I googled Dr. Stal's name today to get an address so I could send him a thank you note for the life changing cleft lip surgery he did on my son over 18 years ago. I wanted to share with him that his work was perfect and my son was voted most handsome out of his class of 250 students. Who would have dreamed that would happen 18 years ago? It was possible because of the wonderful surgeon Dr. Stal was. I know he changed many, many lives all in a days work. I also wanted to share that my son is in his first year of college at TAMU and plans to become a surgeon. I just wish I would have had the opportunity to thank him. I am so very sad to find this news.

I am in tears. Words cannot describe how saddened I am to learn of Dr. Stal's passing. I have been thinking and praying for him, hoping that he would get better and concur the disease. Dr. Stal has done so much for countless patients and their families that he deserved to have a long, long life full of many blessings. I truly think that he is as close to a Saint as a human being can get. He devoted himself to advancing medicine, teaching, and above all helping patients and their families. He restored smiles where there was sadness. He simply put changed lives. My daughter Sophia was born with bilateral cleft lip and palate, and Dr. Stal was her miraculous surgeon through 4 of her surgeries. I still remember the first time we walked into his office. He seemed somewhat reserved, but there was such goodness, confidence, and feeling of calm shining through his eyes. I immediately knew that he was somebody I can trust, somebody who would always do the best for my baby girl. He was not excessively talkative, but he had the amazing ability to tell the truth and still make us feel that everything will be OK in the end. Every step of the way Dr. Stal has been nothing but the most amazing, talented surgeon and a very kind, selfless human being who has always been there for us. My daughter is a happy and successful 10-year old girl now who wants to be a doctor herself one day. My family will be forever grateful to Dr. Stal and will always remember him. He has a special place in our hearts. When I count my blessings every Thanksgiving and Christmas, he is always one of them. We love you Dr. Stal! I know you are in a good place right now, but it is still very hard to accept this. Most sincere and heartfelt condolences to Dr. Stal's family!

There are no words to express how heavy my heart is after learning of Dr. Stal's passing. Dr. Stal took care every one of my many surgeries and was always there to hold my mother's hand when she was worried. When I learned my son would also be born with a cleft I reassured my husband that Dr. Stal would take care of him. Dr. Stal did his cleft repair in March.

Dr. Stal will forever hold a place in my family's heart.

Life will not go in the same way without him.
If it were the same, we could only conclude

The fact that he left behind a place that can not be filled,
is a high tribute to the uniqueness of his soul.

I still remember the day I first walked to Dr. Stals office 3 years ago. I was 25 weeks pregnant expecting a baby boy that came with cleft lip and palate. We made a trip from Mexico to see him because we made a lot of research and taught we was the best Dr. to treat our baby. When we finally met him his words where the light our family needed to know everything was going to be fine. The confidence he gave us science the first day is unexplainable. I want to tell his family he will always be remembered in a very special way in our family. I will never be able to express how grateful I am that he had gave our son the best smile a child could have. We will keep him, his family and his medical team in our prayers.

I am so very sad to hear of the passing of such a great doctor. He treated my son for cleft lip/palate. I remember the day my son was 2 months old when he had his first surgery and he is now almost 14 yrs old. In that time, I have come to have total faith and trust in him as a surgeon. He will be missed terribly by our family. Our prayers of comfort go out to his family at this time and also his wonderful staff at Tx Childrens. Godspeed Dr Stal!

Dr. Stal I thank you so much for all your hard work you have done for me. You have changed my life tremendously through all my surgeries all 20 years of my life. I was in shock the day my mom told me. Thinking back I remember always telling you how I wanted Angelina Jolie lips you would laugh and smile and say in time for now we will just do little baby steps for now. You were so patient with me and by far the best doctor out there! I have truly learned that beauty is not on the outside but what lies on the inside, in your heart. I have learned that because of you I am finally comfortable in my own skin and okay with knowing I will never look 100% normal. I can not express how much I will miss you and all the lives and hearts you have touched is incredible. Thank You! My prayers go out to his family. He will be missed so much!

Samuel Stal will be greatly missed. I meet you 6 years ago when my granddaughter was born. She has come along way from that first day and still has along way to go. We will miss you and the great work you have done. I still remember what you told me. On a scale from 1to10 she is a 12 but it will be ok, let's just give her time to grow, and don't rush things. We will miss you very much.

It is with great sadness we say "so long" to such a great man. Our family has such gratitude for the incredible work he did for our daughter Shelby, always with that reassuring smile and the feeling as if she was his only patient. We were so distraught when she was born and without Dr Stal and the incredible team at TCH we have grown to know over 18 years we could have never reached where we are today. Shelby has had an incredible life thus far, filled with confidence we never dreamed possible in June of 1994. Shelby left for College this weekend, chossing to strike out on her own and not attend school with her life long friends and classmates but rather reach for new experiances, THAT Dr Stal, is because of the gift you gave her. God bless you Samuel Stal, rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to the family, I just found out and was saddened by the news. Dr. Stal was a speacial kind of person and Dr. He has done surgery on my daughter Brooke for 20 years now. So we see him every year. We have since moved to Austin and Brooke would not trust anyone else to work on her sugeries but him so we have been driving back to Houston for the last 10 years for her surgeries. She looks so beautiful now because of his work. I still remember Brooke first sugery at age 6 months and how upset and nervous I was as a Mom. And Dr Stal would come out and give me a hug and told me he would take special care of her. He did this with every surgery, her last one was this year with him. Thank you for being that special Doctor that is so hard to find these days! You will be missed and We will miss you!!!

I had known Dr. Stal all of my life. He was my surgeon, yes, but so much more than that. He gave my parents and myself hope that I would have a normal life. I can never express how grateful I am to have known him. He impacted the lives of thousands of people such as myself and his work will not be forgotten. He was a selfless and brilliant individual. It breaks my heart to read that Dr Stal passed away. We knew each other in high school and reconnected in the PICU at TCH in the 80s. What a great spirit and healer. He was a true holy man. May his memory be a blessing. Gayle Kamen-Weinstein

Dr. Stal was the living embodiment of a miracle to our son John Hilgert and our family. His phenomenal skill, professionalism and assurance in our time of need was immeasurable. He will be missed by many but truly fought the good fight and made this world a better place. Our prayers are with his family and you can be at peace to know that he was a miracle worker who had a significant positive effect on our lives and many others. Though our son John is still not old enough to really appreciate what Dr. Stal did for him, we will be sure to let him know someday what an important man he was in his life. God bless you all and especially Dr. Stal, may he be forever remembered for all he has done. With deepest gratitude and sympathy.

Dr. Stal, thanks for your leadership and camaraderie on mission to Port Au Prince Haiti, June 2009. It was an awesome privilege to work with you and Drew.
