Sidney Wallace Obituary

DR. SIDNEY WALLACE, Professor Emeritus at University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, was a physician, scholar, author, teacher, researcher, inventor, businessman, painter, sculptor, cartoonist, songwriter, singer, and an outstanding husband, father and grandfather. He died on May 25, 2013 surrounded by his wife and children. He was 84 years old.
A founding father of the pioneering field of Interventional Radiology, his techniques and many of his devices and approaches formed the fundamental principles of his discipline. His distinguished career spanned more than four decades, and he was honored for his achievements by many international societies including the Society of Interventional Radiology, American College of Radiology and those of France, Japan, Australia and Brazil and numerous others. While Dr. Wallace began his medical career in 1950 in Philadelphia at Temple University Medical school, most of his medical life and work took place here in Houston where he was Professor of Radiology, Chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Division Head of Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
After his retirement in 1996, he founded a biomedical company to commercialize a cancer drug "Opaxio" currently in Phase III Trials. The drug was developed in response to Dr. Wallace's sister's battle with ovarian cancer. Sadly, he did not live to see the conclusion of those trials and the hoped for success of his investigations. This is one of many inventions, gadgets
and devices that Dr. Wallace was involved in creating and investigating. He was relentless in his pursuit of his ideas and excellence.
A central tenet of Dr. Wallace's work was teaching the next generation. His excitement about the then burgeoning world of interventional radiology bordered on the evangelical, and he was bursting with enthusiasm to share it and spread the interventional gospel. And he did. He lectured often and everywhere, but he never traveled without his beloved wife, Marsha, who on one occasion was called upon to substitute for him. She had heard him speak so often that she could and did.
His creative endeavors went far beyond medicine. He was also an avid painter, sculptor, songwriter, all done in his "spare time," and always done with tremendous energy and verve.
He always had time to help his friends, both old and suddenly new, with medical problems, and he was dogged in the pursuit of a solution. This also extended to his own kidney cancer which he treated in a novel and creative way. Many believe he saved his own life. By embolizing the kidney, he gave himself an extra thirty years to enjoy and experience the life of his family and grandchildren and make many of the contributions listed here. We will all miss him terribly.
Sidney Wallace's life revolved around two poles - his work and his family. He loved them both equally and deeply,
and he wanted to do the best job he possibly could for each. He loved his family with every fiber of his being.
Dr. Wallace is survived by his wife Marsha; his children Stewart Wallace, Dianne Festa, Andrea Wallace, Jonathan Friedman, Michael Wallace and Valerie Wallace; and his grandchildren Erin and Sydney Wallace, Lucas Wallace, and Benjamin and Jeremy Friedman.
A fund will be established in Dr. Wallace's to support cancer treatment in Interventional Radiology. To donate please email [email protected]
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Tuesday May 28 at

Everyday oncological radiological intervention is an occasion to remember Sid. He showed the way which stays illuminated for ever. I had the privilege to share great professional and private moments with Sid, Marsha and Stewart. Great people make others great. Thank you Sid.

The spirit of Sid will remain always with us, in every interventional procedure I do. I will do my best to tranmit to the next generations what He taught. My feelings of sorrow are with Marsha.

I was sad when I found out Dr. Wallace passed away. He and Mrs. Wallace were like family and meant a lot to my mom, Patricia Flowers, and her kids. Both Dr. and Mrs. Wallace attended my wedding and were very active in wanting to know about my progress in life. I really appreciate Dr. Wallace for treating us like family and being a part of the reason my moms longevity with her career at MD Anderson was established.

You will truly be missed.

I thought Sid was with us for ever. His personality has enlighted and orientated my professional itinerary. I appreciated His outstanding commitment to education and resarch. Sid had a unique gift to teach which I have never met again. He contributed enormously to my progress in intervention. Sid is a legend of His time. My thoughts and feeling are with Marsha and Her family. So many memories of good days spent together throughout the world are left.
With sympathy,

Our thoughts are with you.

Sidney brightened the lives of all he touched - directly or indirectly. I have been the beneficiary of his skills, brio, humor and kindness since we met as residents so many years ago.

Marsha, in the sense that we live on in the people we have influenced and helped to grow, Sid could not have a finer memorial. May you continue to celebrate his life through memories, your children and grandchildren.

With sympathy,
Renate & Dick Soulen

I'm really going to miss you, you were one of my mentors. You taught us about art, opera and fine dining, eatzies, star pizza and your favorite popeyes chicken!! Of course we had to hide it from Mrs. Wallace. I'm going to miss your smile, your humor and you being so down to earth. We will watch out for Mrs. Wallace and the grands, one of your "girls", Debbie Smith

He was my teacher, my mentor and an amazing man on so many levels. I will miss talking to him. My first memory of Dr. Wallace was as a new resident doing neuro at MD Anderson Cancer Center. I did not know my cranial nerves as well as I should and he proceeded to draw out the base of the skull with all the foramen and discuss all of the nerve roots. The drawing was suitable for framing. I knew then I was in the presence of a special person. That was confirmed many, many times over in the last 32 years that I have known him.
He and his family have been so kind to my family in times of need.
When I think about what a physician should be, there stands Sid Wallace. He will be missed by many.
My wife and I give our condolences to his family.

He probably influenced my professional life more than any other physician educator I encountered. He cast a huge shadow and made the world infinitely more interesting while challenging the physicians he trained to achieve excellence.

A great friend and mentor. He will be missed, but his legacy will last forever. Tom and Barbara Harle.

To Mrs. Wallace & Family:
God judges men on 2 things; (1) their faith and (2) content of one's heart. Dr. Sidney Wallace exemplified both of these character traits, and many more. He was a wonderful mentor to all, and for all of us who were able to be under his tutelage, we are extremely grateful.
I for one am so thankful that God allowed Dr. Wallace to pass my way and to Mrs. Wallace and the Wallace family do not hesitate to call on me if needed ( no matter what day or hour), that's the least I can do for you all, to thank Dr. Wallace for all that the Wallace family has done for me and my family through the years.
I can still hear Dr. Wallace telling ("The Girls"), Erlinda, Debbie, Jill, Carrie, and Pat ....."You all be sweet now". That was his way of telling us to remember above all to " treat people the way we would want to be treated".
Thank you Dr. Wallace
