Stephen Iles Mitchell, 77, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully at home October 8, 2025. Born in 1948, in Burbank, California, Steve embodied the true Texan spirit, often declaring, "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could." A University of South Carolina graduate, Steve spent most of his career as President of Bonanza Marble Company in Houston, achieving success through his natural sales talent and entrepreneurial drive.
Steve's radiant grin and generous spirit etched joy into every encounter. His quick wit and playful humor could brighten the gloomiest day. Steeped in faith, his love for Jesus Christ shone through soulful prayers, prompting friends to tease he missed his true calling as a preacher. In later years, neighbors eagerly awaited his warm banter while strolling with his faithful Lab, Cooper. Steve greeted every day as a God-given mission to spark smiles or unleash a Texas-sized laugh. He sought moments of quiet generosity and kindness. Above all, his greatest joy was his family.
Steve is survived by his wife of 40 years, Julie Koppenberger Mitchell; their children: Jaclyn (Jackson) Taylor, with Jace and Jade; Ashley (Alex) Zumberge, with Evie, Zoey, Xander, and Fritz; and Iles (Abbey) Mitchell, expecting a child; his son Christian (Anna) Jensen, with Charlie and Frank; and his sister, Lynn (John) Brgoch. He was preceded in death by his parents, Georgia Muir Mitchell and Robert Iles Mitchell, and his sister Marcia Muir Mitchell.
Steve's legacy of love, laughter, and faith will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. We take comfort in knowing he is now whole in Heaven.
A memorial service will be held on November 6, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, Houston. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Alzheimer's Association in Steve's honor at alz.org.

Steve was always a breath of fresh air, his positivity and gentle way of interacting with people was always something I admired. Knew him for 35 plus years and never remember him not having a smile on his face or bringing a smile to someone else. God Bless him and his family.

It was always a great time with many fond memories when the Mitchell clan would get together! Steve and I were just a year apart and yes he had an amazing smile which made all those around him feel special. I was sad to hear about his passing. My sincere condolences for the families loss
