STUART SCHUBE Obituary

STUART SCHUBE, age 70, passed away in Houston on June 30, 2010. He is survived by his wife Priscilla, sons Jonathan and Scott, daughters-in-law Mirari and Sarit, and grandchildren Aritz, Ainara, Samuel, Oren, Talya, and Orly.Stuart was born in Brooklyn, New York, and although he spent the last four decades of his life in Texas, he always maintained a deep connection to his birthplace, his high school Brooklyn Tech, and his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, for whom he later co-founded a Brooklyn Dodgers fan club in Houston. Stuart earned a BS in Industrial Engineering from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and an MS in Industrial Administration from Purdue University, and soon after moved to Houston with his wife Priscilla.Stuart was a venture capitalist in the Houston area since the late 1960's and helped scores of early-stage companies start, grow, and thrive. He was a General Partner in the Genesis Fund, a Houston-based early-stage venture capital fund from 1986 to 1998. From 1998 to 2010, Stuart was the President of Acorn Ventures, Inc., a corporate planning and financing consulting firm that works with small and medium sized emerging businesses. From 2005 to 2010, Stuart was also a special limited partner and Advisor to DFJ Mercury, a Houston-based seed and early-stage venture capital firm. He was also a General Partner of Pebblebrook Partners, LTD, a private investment firm, and a Board Member of American Electric Technologies, Inc., (NASDAQ: AETI). Stuart also gave of his time at the Houston Technology Center, a non-profit technology incubator, where he was an advisor to many Houston-based information technology companies and sat on the Center's IT Advisory Board. He taught marketing at the University of Houston for several years, and gave his time to the University of Houston's Center for Technology & Entrepreneurship, where he lectured on a variety of business and entrepreneurial topics. Stuart was the past president of the Houston Chapter of the American Marketing Association and the Association for Corporate Growth.Beyond his work in venture capital and with professional organizations, Stuart took special interest and pride in mentoring countless young people during the past three decades, offering them job and professional advice, making introductions and connections, and influencing their direction. Multiple members of the business community in Houston and beyond credit Stuart to this day for his mentoring impact on their careers. He continued to grow intellectually by forming what he referred to as The Big Boys Discussion Group, which met every six weeks to discuss economic issues and world events. As any of his family, friends, and acquaintances can attest to, Stuart had strongly held opinions and was never afraid to express them in any situation. At the same time, his openness and irreverence endeared him to nearly everyone he came into contact with, and he maintained friendships with people of all persuasions, politics, and walks of life. Stuart was always quick with a joke, and famously would talk to anyone he met.Stuart's grandparents emigrated from Eastern Europe and Russia, where they were subject to intense oppression and poverty, and moved to New York, where his father worked as a milkman and taxi cab driver. Stuart had a lifelong appreciation for his grandparents' and parents' journey and sacrifice as laying the foundation for his own life and achievements. He believed strongly that their type of immigrant success story is part of the great opportunity provided in the United States, and could have happened nowhere else. For this and many other reasons Stuart was a fervent supporter of America and would often tell anyone he met that this is the greatest country in the world.Stuart also had a very strong tie and commitment to the Jewish people and participated actively in the Jewish community. He served on the board of directors of Congregation Emanu El in Houston and as its Treasurer for several years. He was also on the board of the Holocaust Museum Houston and served on the Allocation Committee of the Jewish Federation in Houston.Stuart was a loving father and grandparent and took great pleasure in watching his children and grandchildren grow and trying to pass on his values and principles. Most of all, he loved his wife Priscilla, his partner and soulmate of over forty years and a foundation for everything he did.Stuart often said he considered himself the luckiest man alive, for the great country he lived in; his supportive and loving parents; the amazing education he was able to receive; a career that let him do what he loved and was good at; his wife, children, and grandchildren; and the wide circle of other family and friends who he enjoyed being with. Those who knew and spent time with Stuart consider themselves very lucky too. He will be missed. His funeral will be held at Congregation Emanu El, 1500 Sunset, Houston at 10:00 AM. Private gravesite burial.Donations in Stuart Schube's memory can be sent to:1) Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation, 29 Fort Greene Place, Brooklyn, NY 11217https://www.bthsalumni.org/ SSLPage.aspx?pid=4162) Holocaust Museum Houston5401 Caroline St., Houston, TX 77004-6804http://www.hmh.org/donation.aspx

Stuart was one of the most opinionated members -- but one of my stronger supporters -- at the Houston Venture Capital Association. He also helped a friend of mine codify her second-business plan, so she could bring her program to market. One can't help but miss a man who helped others excel.

Dear Prissy, Bill told me on Monday about Stu's death. So sorry for your loss. I moved to Florida a year ago and am still unpacking. Bill lives in Longwood about 2 hours south of my retirement community, and Greg lives in San Francisco.

I have such fond memories of our friendship and the fun travels we had together. You are lucky to have your sons nearby -- and grandchildren, no less (I have none).

Although we have not been in contact for years, I still think of the two of you.

Best wishes to you and have a wonderful life.

Stuart was a true jewel. The last time I spoke to him was 4-6 weeks ago. I asked him if he wanted to go to religious services (a baseball game ) he said he couldn't walk very well but would enjoy having lunch with me. I told him I would come by and pick him up in a few weeks. I wish I would have. Clayton Norris, CFP

Dear Mrs. Schube and Family,
I was heartbroken when I heard of the passing of Mr. Schube. He will be so truly missed by so many. I loved receiving his phone calls, his humor, his knowledge. It seemed like everytime I spoke to him, I learned something new. Very few people can say that they can do that. I am so happy that he came into our family's life. He would never forget to ask how each person was doing. Both of you introduced me to your wonderful family. He was a friend and a teacher. I will so miss his phone calls and his parting words "Charge On". Wish we could do something to ease your sorrow. May all the wonderful memories heal your hearts.
With love and friendship,
Debbie, Brian, Alex and Phillip King

Words cannot describe my heart felt sorrow upon learning of my dear friend Stuart Schube's passing.

Stuart and I grew up together on the same floor at 672 Empire Blvd, a few blocks from our beloved Brooklyn Dodgers and Ebberts Field.

Stuart had great passions for his family, friends, Repbublicans, The Presidents Bush and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Stuart had a great respect for my parents and always treated them with honor and compassion.

My condolences to Priscilla and the boys. May Stuart's memory be for a blessing.

Harold Schiffer and the entire Schiffer family.

Brenda and Bill and our family extend our deepest sympathies to you on Stuart's passing. As we all recognize, he was a unique individual and the world is less without him. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Pamela and I were simply shocked when we saw the newspaper this morning!! We have nothing but the deepest respect and appreciation of and for Stewart and the wonderful life he has lived. We are personal recipients of some of his greatest talents...and now grieve at the loss. But we most particularly grieve with Priscilla who must now go forward without the strength and support of Stewart. We will pray daily for the whole family both now and in the future.

Unfortunately we found the obituary too late this morning to attend the funeral. We now live in Montgomery TX so there was no way to mobilize and cover the distance in the time we had left after reading the paper. Know however that we wanted to be there and have been there is spirit....

Dear Priscilla: Lela and I were so saddened to learn of Stuart's death, and regret that we did so only this morning, not in time to attend the service today. Stuart was a good man and a good friend and we had a lot of fun together over the past 25 years. All the best to you, Jonathan, and Scott.
