1954-2017
Susan Mary Gilbert— Strong woman, loving mother, devoted wife, human resources and diversity leader and dear friend to many—passed away peacefully August 30, 2017.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, she migrated to Texas in 1982 after earning her Master's Degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She began her career in the retail industry with Sakowitz Department Store, followed by a venture into the financial field with Republic Bank where she first met her husband to be, Donald E. Gilbert, Jr. in 1986. Following marriage and birth of their two sons, Susan found her calling in healthcare human resources. With a tenure spanning over twenty years, Susan rose to make innumerable contributions to human resources and diversity programs at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, achieving the position of Associate Vice President, Diversity & Inclusion before leaving in 2010. In 2011, she became Associate Vice Chancellor of Human Resources at the University of California-Davis. Susan and Don explored the west coast together until Don's untimely passing. Susan always considered Houston her home and returned, finally retiring here in 2015.
Family always came first for Susan. She artfully balanced her career success with her commitment to family, serving as a den leader for both of her sons throughout Cub Scouts, dedicated supporter of their athletic endeavors, masterful planner of family vacations and active member of the church. Susan loved her friends as well, and when not playing Mahjong with the girls, welcomed the opportunity to go out on the town or host a dinner party. Throughout all of this, her talent for photography has filled our home with beautiful memories of the energy and vitality of the wonderful life that she led.
Susan is survived by her sons Nicholas Lyons Gilbert and Alexander Gunning Gilbert, step-children Jennifer Andersen Rooney and Donald Edwin Gilbert III, and her sister Tina Hilton.
A memorial service will be held in Houston, Texas at St. Francis Episcopal Church at 11am on Saturday, September 23rd followed by a reception at Ouisie's Table at 12:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be mailed to St. Francis Episcopal Church 345 Piney Point Rd, Houston, TX 77024. Memorial donations will go to helping young adults learn job skills and personal finance.

I am sorry to hear of Susan's passing. She and I dated/lived together from Sept.1970 until March of 1973. She remained close to my parents who moved to Fort Worth in August of 1973. I am glad to hear that Tina is still alive...she babysat for our kids a few times as I recall. Condolences to Susan's family and friends!!
