Sylvia Aaronson Obituary

Sylvia Lack Aaronson, beloved mother, grandmother and wife passed away July 20, 2007. After six years of a courageous fight against amyloidosis, Sylvia passed peacefully in her home with her loving husband Myles and family at her side. Sylvia was born February 23, 1929 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Sam and Beatrice Lack. The family moved to McAllen, Texas, where Sam Lack started the Lacks furniture stores of the Valley. At age 16, after already graduating high school, she enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin. Sylvia graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in Government from Plan II. She met and married the love of her life, Myles Aaronson at UT and returned to McAllen to raise her family. The two would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this coming January. A life-long member of Hadassah, President of Temple Emanuel Sisterhood in McAllen and Superintendent of the Sunday school, Sylvia was active in the Jewish community. Sylvia spent many years volunteering for the Jewish Family Service Project Shalom. She also volunteered for Bonds for Israel and the United Jewish Appeal. For the University of Texas, Sylvia served as Regent of the Advisory board of UT Pan American and was a member of the UT System Chancellor Counsel executive committee. Sylvia was President of the Board at Bayou Bend Condominiums. She enjoyed playing Mah Jongg with friends. Sylvia's generosity extended beyond these community services, quietly providing mitzvahs for individuals, especially women she cared for without expecting anything in return. She touched the lives of many, always giving of herself. For Sylvia, friends were like family and she welcomed many friends, neighbors and caregivers into hers. A legacy in forgiveness, she taught her grandchildren and those around her if you can't forgive someone, God can't forgive you. A peacemaker at heart, she wanted harmony for all. She didn't see color; she just saw your heart. Survived by her beloved husband Myles, children Lee and wife Paula, Julie and husband David Keim, Carolyn and Vicki and husband Charley Hutson, grandchildren Justin, Seth, Jeff, Becca, Danny, Emily, Andrew, Stephen and Michael, sister Jean Cohen and husband Robert, brother Stanley Lack and wife Helen, sisters-in-law Terry Woskow and Paula Pozmantier, as well as many other loving family members and friends. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 23 at noon at Congregation Temple Emanu-El, 1500 Sunset Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Jewish Family Services of Houston, Temple Emanuel of McAllen, the Boys and Girls Club of McAllen or a charity of your choice.
