William Blanton Obituary

William Neal Blanton III
12/09/1946 - 03/12/2024
William Neal Blanton III passed away peacefully on March 12, 2024. He was born December 9, 1946. A lifelong Houstonian, Bill attended Lee high school, and graduated from Rice University. He received a law degree from The University of Texas and went into private practice with Butler Binion and later at Exxon for several years.

Bill was one of Houston's early championship level croquet players; first with the Houston Mallet Club and later the Houston Croquet Association. Bill was instrumental in garnering support to build the croquet courts at Houston's Memorial Park.

He is survived by his brother, Tom Blanton of San Antonio, his sister Jane Sims, and numerous first cousins. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Judge William Neal Blanton Jr and Elizabeth Putnam Blanton.

The family would like to acknowledge Pauline Elder for her compassionate loving care for Bill in the last year of his life. He was a member of Saint Paul's Methodist Church. A private family service will be held at Forest Park Lawndale, Saturday March 16, 2024.

I lived next door to Bill's parents for many years. His father, Judge Blanton, was a wise and thoughtful neighbor and advisor. I met Bill several years later as he would look in on his dad. Bill was a kind, quiet and compassionate man. He helped and advised me on a court brief for a mediation. And he went beyond being kind, caring and brave when we had to transport my beloved and seriously ill 80 lb. golden retriever to the vet. He stayed with me while we had to put him down, we cried together as we saw his spirit leave his body, and he and his dad gave me great comfort and support in the following days and weeks. He always volunteered his help or services. Bill was a bit of a Renaissance man; he was a member of the Christopher Marlowe Society, a wine connoisseur, and extremely well-read. He and his dad were very special men who worked in quiet ways.
