William Hoffman Obituary

William H. Hoffman, Jr.
1929-2016
Dr. William Henry Hoffman, Jr., known to his family and friends as "Bill," passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 1st, after a brief illness. Preceding him in death were his parents, William Henry Hoffman, Sr. and Waifie Mae Hackworth Hoffman (both of Beaumont, Texas) and his son, William Henry Hoffman, III of Houston. Dr. Hoffman was born in Casper, Wyoming in 1929 and also lived in both Belgium and Argentina during his youth, ultimately residing in Port Arthur, Texas. He attended Allen Military Academy in Bryan, Texas, and continued his education by attending Rice University before ultimately transferring to the University of Michigan, where he went on to earn BA and JD degrees before serving in the Korean War as an officer of the U.S. Army's Judge Advocate General Corps. Following his return from military service, he completed MBA and PhD degrees from The University of Texas at Austin, remaining to teach at The University for four more years. Dr. Hoffman also served as a professor of accounting and taxation at Louisiana State University before taking a tenured faculty appointment at the University of Houston beginning in 1967, teaching for 33 years until his retirement in 1999. Simultaneously spanning over 50 years of his career, Professor Hoffman held continuous membership with the Texas State Bar as an attorney and was also a licensed CPA in Texas for more than five decades. Overlapping his distinguished career as a professor and mentor to so many students and colleagues, Dr. Hoffman is probably best known for his extensive contributions in the field of taxation as the primary editor of four decades' worth of college-level texts in the areas of Individual Income Taxation and Corporations, Partnerships, Estates & Trusts. His texts in these areas have been regarded by some as the standard in taxation education preparation in the U.S. and are still in use to this day in many institutions offering academic programs in these areas. Aside from his passion for interpreting tax code for pre-service and practicing tax professionals, Dr. Hoffman held a keen interest in military history, particularly any such relating to the U.S. Civil War.
Dr. Hoffman is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bonnie Lou Schaff Hoffman, daughter Jennifer Mayo of Atlanta, GA and husband, Jeff, Bonnie Lynne Hoffman and partner Susan Hoover of Houston, sons Richard M. Hoffman of Houston, and Thomas M. Hoffman and his wife Carrie H. Hoffman, both of Dallas. In addition, other family members, daughter-in-law Paula K. Hoffman of Houston, grandchildren William John Hoffman and wife Brenda of Houston, Elizabeth Anne Hoffman Brown and husband Travis of Austin, Samantha A. Hoffman and Maggie Hoffman of Dallas, great-grandchildren Lillian and Evelyn Brown of Austin, and first cousins Charles Hundley of Austin and Patricia Jeanne Myers of Florida will all miss Bill greatly.
The family of Dr. Hoffman would like to give special thanks to the staff at Houston Methodist Hospital, particularly the employees of Fondren 10 who so professionally and compassionately cared for him in his final days.
A private family service is planned, and if desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Christopher's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 1656 Blalock, Houston, TX 77080.

I met Dr Hoffman briefly. I-Was studying tax at the UOfH law library. I must have bought his West taxation, because it was with me when I arrived in Nassau Bahamas in 199 with no job or money to speak of. But, I managed to make a few million teaching and applying his domestic tax book with international tax books to over 1000 clients. The description of his tax writings by others is correct. A real scholar, and he will be remembered by me for a little nag time.

I took an accounting class from Professor Hoffman in the mid 80's at UH and he was a great professor. I specifically remember his humor. Especially the joke about coming home and feeling the warmth of the TV set...just to check up on the wife. God bless.

Bonnie,

Bill is clearly the most unforgetable man I have ever known. He was a real pioneer in our field. His wit and enthusiasm were constant sources of amazement to me. I tried to immitate both in my lectures but normally failed. He was always the mentor who shaped my academic career How he could tell jokes no one could get away with today!

I am very sorry to read of his passing.

Bonnie,

I am saddened to hear of Bill's death. I am at a loss for words for you other than to let you know you are in my prayers.

I was very blessed to have known Bill as my professor, as a mentor then friend and colleague. I particularly remember his funny stories he used in class to illustrate tax rules and life.
