I'm cousin of Bill via Morris Thornton of Faison NC (my grandfather) who died in rural Sampson County NC in the late 70s.
I met Bill at UNC in the early 90s when he came to speak at the Physics department. I was an AFROTC cadet UNC at the time with dreams of being a pilot and astronaut like him. He later wrote me a letter on how to reach my astronaut dream, I still have that letter.
My eyesight did not lead to being a pilot so I instead was a Space and Missile Ops Officer in the Air Force for 20 years...small irony with our missile and space paths.
I hope to live a long and productive life like Bill, a true American legend. I am glad I am related to him, but sad I was late in getting this news of his passing. The next time I am in the San Antonio area I will look up the rest of the family there and hopefully get to visit my Texas cousins. I can be reached at [email protected]

Dr. Bill Thornton was a giant figure in the history of space medicine and physiology. I learned of his work and knew his name soon after entering the field in the mid-1980s. In addition to his research contributions, he was a prolific inventor in a wide variety of areas, which is an underutilized avenue of creativity in biomedical science. He was a great help to us in the early 1990s with his space exercise-related insights and loan of his self-powered treadmill prototype for use in space. Modern space medicine builds on the foundation of his legacy and contributions. Thanks and blessings to his family,
