I have been inside mostly lately, and due to catching the flu. It was bidding this time, and more than I had experienced in many a year. I now reside in my hometown of Taunton, Massachusetts, but also, I remembered the past sickness without having too much rain and mostly perfect weather while living in San Francisco, California. The scenario healing one's cold or flu was to sit in the back deck and walking downstairs to the cafe to order coffee, juice, and a variety of pastries. One of my favorite pastimes was to sit on the deck outside of my apartment on weekends. When I felt better, I would cover up some, take a walk, and realize the happy friendly place, the neighborhood I lived in, all people in my age group in the 1980s, all mostly in our 30s, and with careers that kept us busy during the week and allowed for some mellow times on the weekends (and especially with bad colds like my own).
Now, in 2024, retired and I am in my mid-70s and although feeling well mostly, I like most humans get colds from time to time. I enjoy living again in New England, and I also would remember old friends and also keeping in touch with Barbara King. She moved onto Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to find her niche in modern dance and ballet. And then married and moved onto Boise, Idaho.
I reflected back on times when you could feel comfortable with a good friend, like Barbara, she straight, and myself gay, a good mix and still we had our own lives. Before retirement, I was in a career in state government, and I knew she still had hers with the arts. I thought about those past years and her passing and saying a prayer that she was happy with her new existence and perhaps as old friends we may bump into one another once again. Dance forever, Barbara, I hope it brings you peace.

We were friends in San Francisco. One story sticks out; we had a discussion about how odd that things always go good a first with new jobs, but why is it that nearing the first 6-12 months it becomes questionable. Barbara smiled and said, "... well maybe you should consider putting an ad in the jobs section asking for one that makes money but also brings satisfaction?" Ohhh ... I said 'nirvana' at the desk?" No she meant, "it was an unknown, but to find out and get the information and include the job and pay scale." "Really? I said, why? "I will apply for it, too!" We both laughed; no such job exists in reality. Oh well, back to the search.

I met Barbara in 1977 and when I first moved to San Francisco from the Boston area. We worked at Wells Fargo Bank and a great friendship ensued. In 1980, as we were needing a different home with more room, small studio, and I decided to move to the Russian Hill area and she decided to do the same. We were a gay man and straight woman living as close friends together and seemingly a precursor to the comedy 'Will & Grace'. It was a great friendship for years, and although our lives moved on and my return to school and securing a new position in Boston in 1989. We kept in touch often and she was always one of my great friends. Honest, sincere, and kind hearted, she was the best. My condolences to her husband Mark and her family and friends. I am sure she was blessed and is in good hands in Heaven. May she rest in peace.
