GARY SHUE Obituary
BOISE - Gary was born May 9, 1945 to Don and Ilo Shue in St. Luke's Hospital in Boise, Idaho. He died on October 17, 2025 at his family home in Boise, Idaho, with Dorothy, his wife of 56 years, by his side, their two sons Jonah and Max nearby. Gary spent the majority of his life in the home, a physical expression of the values he and Dorothy shared. Gary grew up in Boise, a life full of adventure, from scuba diving at 14 with the Hell Divers Skindiving Club, to skydiving at Strawberry Glen Air Field, to running the rivers of Idaho and the Northwest.
Their home embodies a shared labor of love, of expansive gardens, from the numerous fruit trees Gary loved pruning, to the vegetable plot he amended and tilled. Over the decades Gary's fine woodworking skills and artistry transformed the house and property into a communal hub and gathering place for music parties and holiday celebrations filled with friends and family.
After moving to California, Gary met Dorothy and other lifelong friends. Gary took Dorothy birdwatching on their first date, what would become a lifelong pursuit. He graduated from San Jose State with a degree in biology, and he and Dorothy would return to Boise in the early 70's after completing his conscientious objector service. Folk dancing classes and jam sessions connected them with more future friends for life. As co-founders of the Idaho Folklore Society, they were instrumental in establishing the folk music community in Boise, bringing touring musicians, regular Old-Time Square Dances, Irish jam sessions and more to their home and to Boise. For 12 years Gary taught fifth grade at Ross Elementary in Kuna before transitioning to a woodworking career. In that transition he built his first wooden boat, a drift boat he and Dorothy navigated down Idaho's rivers, frequently rebuilding it enroute. From wooden boats that he piloted, mandolins that he played for concerts and dances, to fine cabinetry for friends and businesses throughout the Treasure Valley, and his own home, Gary created beauty in all that he did.
An avid reader, traveler, and nature lover, Gary spent countless nights -while counting every one- outdoors with Dorothy, and close friends and family, camping throughout the US. He shared his passions with his family, spending valued time in his shop with his grandsons, patiently completing projects, and sharing quiet afternoon naps when they were young.
Gary leaves behind a legacy defined by enduring craft, unwavering hospitality, and love of music and community.
