Jack D. Bowen passed away peacefully at his home on May 14, 2018. He was born to Leslie and Hortense Leishman Bowen on November 17, 1926, in Burley, Idaho. Jack was raised in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, and Logan, Utah. He married Jacqueline Snell and to this union had three sons. They were divorced. As a youth, his days were filled with outdoor activities. Fishing, playing tennis and hunting were his favorites. From an early age to middle teens, he had a paper route and throughout his life he never forgot to tip a paper boy a little extra for their efforts. He has jokingly said his mother always saw that he had a job.
Jack was an accomplished athlete in tennis at Logan High School where he graduated and later in life became an avid golfer. He enlisted in the Navy on his 17th birthday and was honorably discharged after serving 2 years. He graduated from Utah State University and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, with a Doctor of Dentistry degree. Jack practiced dentistry in Ogden, Utah, and later transferred to the Veterans Administration working in Phoenix, AZ, Livermore, CA, and Boise, ID.
Jack retired in 1980 but continued doing dentistry for Public Health Service going on short tours of duty to Alaska, Mississippi and Boston. He married Norma Dinsmore Taylor who had two daughters, Linda Nickell and Lori Franklin. After he retired from PHS, they traveled in their RV with their golf clubs to various courses throughout the western states.
Jack is survived by his wife, his sons Scott D. Bowen (Lorrie), Kurt S. Bowen and J. Brad Bowen and 2 stepdaughters; grandchildren Andrew and Brian Bowen; step grandsons Sam Lammers, Alex Franklin, Matt Franklin; 2 nieces and 2 nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Don Bowen and sister Nancy Skabelund.
Special thanks are extended to St. Lukes Hospice and West Valley Wound Clinic. Donations may be made to Smile Train at [email protected] or a charity of your choice.
A committal service will take place Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at 2:00 P. M. in the Committal Shelter, Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100 Horseshoe Bend Rd. in Boise, ID. Cremation is under the direction of Cremation Society of Idaho.
