Ismael and Yolanda de Leon
January 18, 2023
Ismael and I met Kevin about forty-seven years ago when he moved into the house next door on Pilgrim Park Drive in New Plymouth. He would tell us about his hunting and trapping adventures. He was always trying out new bait to trap animals.
It was summer, we believe, when Kevin knocked on our door. He had a gleam in his blue eyes and a smile. He held out several small rolls of meat the size of a cigar. The meat was dark, almost black, rolled up, and wrapped in Saran Wrap. Kevin had given us meat before, but nothing that looked like this. "What´s this?" I asked.
His smile broadened, and he replied, still holding out the meat. "It´s muskrat. It´s really good." Kevin indicated I take the meat.
"Muskrat, you say," I said. "It´s good, huh?"
He nodded. "Yes, you can´t taste the wild in it because it´s smoked." He held the meat to me, nodding, wanting me to take the meat.
We reluctantly took the meat, and Kevin left. We opened one of the rolls and smelled it. It smelled alright. We touched it. It was greasy. "I think it's duck," I told Ismael. He agreed. We tasted it. It was good duck.
Kevin moved to Alaska. Due to the turkeys, we got in touch several years later. We talked about that muskrat meat and had a good laugh together.
We will miss you, Kevin. We will miss listening to all your adventures in Alaska and hanging out with you and Janie. You were a good friend.
